I live on a corner lot with two driveways, sidewalks, a walkway and garden edges. A lot to edge. Also a lot of areas to put a weedeater.
My $60 electric (with cord) Black & Decker weedeater/edger combo is not cutting it. Go through refills like crazy and the line refill stops feeding halfway through much of the time. Lawn looks like shite right now.

Thinking about trying a manual rotary edger and getting a battery powered weed eater. Or should I just ante up and get a gas powered one? Hate to waste $80-100 bucks on a battery powered thing and then have it not work well enough, forcing me to throw down another $180-$220 on a gas powered one.

Any experience with battery powered weed-eaters or any recommendations out there?

I have an echo weedeater.

Couldn't be happier with that purchase. It has the speedfeed head on it. That's what sold me on it.

Can't imagine trying to weedeat everything at my house with an electric.

Worst thing ever invented

Why not get a gas combo one with all of the attachments?

I have Echo as well.

Any major brand from HD or Lowes will be fine.

Look at the Stihl line. I think my edger is one of the 56’s. Basically their string trimmer turned sideways with a edger blade.

i think it was $250 and worth every bit of that. I too had the Black and Decker electric version. It struggled and pulling the stupid electric cord out etc made my edging job a 30 minutes weekly ordeal. With the Stihl it’s a 5-7 minutes job. Replacement blades are a couple bucks. Easily the best $250 I’ve spent on Lawn equipment.

If you don’t hate corded, I used to have a wheeled black and decker edgehog bode edger that cut a great edge for like 80 bucks

I now have a gas edger and it doesn’t seem to do as well but I did hate messing with the cord.

I have an older, John Deere split-boom trimmer. I believe they were built by Shindaiwa, has been absolutely bullet proof! I have the string trimmer, edger, tiller, and hedge trimmer attachments. I have used it every weekend for over 12yrs, and it keeps on performing...

Can't deal with the cord anymore. Have to walk too far from the house. Using multiple extension cords only exacerbates the issues.
Think I'm just going to bite the bullet and get a quality gas powered one with attachments. Probably worth it. Just been trying to justify it in my head instead of trying out a battery powered thing. Think it's the best long term option for my situation.

I ditched gas and went green with the Greenworks 80V system for both edger and blower

Edger

Blower

Since the edger uses the attachments I had left over from my Poulan gas edger, I use the edging attachment I had with that:

Edging attachment

I replaced the string head with a Gator head:
Gator

Good luck!

ETA: One battery is enough. Just make sure you choose the battery option with at least one of them if you go that way

I have Stihl Kombi setup with the trimmer and edger attachments. Even with the smallest power unit it has plenty of power and still lightweight.

Husqvarna or Stihl. I have Husqvarna with the attachments. Been going strong for 5 years. Starts up after 3 pulls every time. Not the cheapest but I like the reliability. Neighbor uses Stihl going on 6 years.

I echo the Echo comments.

I have a weed eater and edger, two units.

But if I were you, I'd just get the gas powered weed eater and use it for both.

I’ve got a 4 cycle Husq and a gator head on it. I flip it sideways to edge. Never have to fuss with line and bump feeding. Replace the blades every spring and they last the summer. About to order a new set that has all metal blades. It can use the edger attachment but when I’m weedeating I can flip to edging quickly with the gator head.

Do yourself a favor and he t a straight shaft Echo. It’ll eat just about anything you can throw at it.
