Looking for a do it all, good insulated rain jacket. It will be used for everything from hunting and fishing to beaver trapping to camping. Ive looked at some of the first lite/sitka jackets but not crazy about that $300+ price tags on them. Doesnt have to be camo.
What are you guys using?
TIA!

I use Cabelas Space Rain. It’s not insulated but you can put it over your insulation layers. I use mine for everything from hunting to LSU baseball games.

You don’t want a cheap, insulated rain jacket. I’ve had a Browning rain jacket for a good while. It stuffs into its own pocket and is about 6”x6”. Easy to pack in case of rain. Buy a little big so you can put it on over other clothing when needed.

My rain jackets are not insulated.

I have a Sitka Downpour and a Simms Guide.

Both are Gore-tex. I have a couple of jackets/vest that I wear underneath if I need more warmth.

... condensation forming between outside fabric and insulation would scare me off. That'd be a hard place to easily rid it from (dry out).

Three Marmot Gore-Tex, a couple other breathable, and 3-4 regular non breathable... but not one insulated.

I have a rainproof Columbia jacket that isn't insulated but has treated me well. Wear a solid layer under and you'll be good.

I've been looking at Filson. They have quality stuff and their new gear seems pretty nice. Especially for all purpose non camo options. Trying to resist temptation.

I wouldn't go insulated if you plan on using it for fishing. Wearing it in a July storm is going to be hell. Non-insulated is bad enough in the summer.

Yep

Gore-Tex has been known to not readily pass moisture through the inside of fabric when insulated. That's why Gore stopped allowing it's use in sleeping bags. They found condensation on the internal side due to not enough pressure differential to force moisture through. They haven't allowed it (eta: in sleeping bags) for a couple decades... and they actually developed a thinner more breathable material for such use. A zip in liner is a different story because you always can remove, match weights for the day, and dry it as need be. Which is a quickly learned lesson and absolutely needed when hiking and backpacking in the rain or snow.

Plus

The inability to appropriately match the amount of insulation would be a show stopper for me. Because sweating when unnecessary is as undesirable as lugging around the excess weight. And layering is like a good friend because it always makes for a pleasant day.

My last two rain jackets have been Marmot and Mountain Hardwear. Both have been good. Marmot I picked up for like $60. I don't think either would be great for hunting or beaver trapping.

Yeah, the Marmot Precip is almost the industry standard for backpacking/ultralight waterproof, breathable layer. They're rugged enough, but hunting is its own kind of rough.

My experience with them has been solid enough to recommend with caveats - you will need some kind of insulating layer unless it is hot and it may not hold up in moderate to heavy brush.

The big boys all make some sort of "3-in-1" - rain shell, fleece liner, wear them together if you need both, and they give you a lot of flexibility - often expensive, now is the best time to shop last year's model. I have a Columbia that is my "take everywhere jacket", but I think it was still $150+ on sale (Academy couple of years back).

Simms Challenger $200, insulated and non-insulated models. Check Simmsfishing.com sale and you might find a discontinued color cheaper.
HUK on Amazon has a jacket for $120.
AFTCO has some also for under $150.

I have a Simms and I tell you what they stand behind their stuff. I had my first one for 5 years and had an issue with the closure on the cuff had separated & i contacted them sent it back and they sent me another one, I have had the new one prob another 5 years and the waterproofing was not what it was I contacted them they said send it in they re waterproofed it sent it back and they returned it and there were some weird spots on it so I snapped a pic and asked what was this? Emailed them back I got a phone call within an hour and a brand new jacket on the way amazing responsive company and the gear is great but when a company stands behind their product like that you can’t help to not support them. It’s not insulated but the shell is amazing I would just wear fleece vest or wool under it in the winter.
