Can someone recommend a good youth starter rod & reel for me to buy my 7 year old son?

My son's Grandpa has his captain's license and takes him fishing on the inlets and out in the ocean all summer. When he comes home he wants me to take him, but unfortunately he was cursed with a father that doesn't fish or hunt. I'd like to start taking him myself and learn together but I don't know where to start with the equipment for someone his age.

When I was his age my Dad gave me a 2000 size spinning reel and a berkley rod. I fished it until I was 14 or so.

Berkley Rod - 6'6" ML

Zebco 202 was my first reel at that age. Zebco 33 was not around.

Whatever you get, get him a full-size rod. Kids can cast them a lot better than those mickey mouse rods.

Usually I agree on the Zebco's, but if he's been fishing as much as it sounds, get him a spinning reel. Mine is only 5yrs old and can cast one just fine, so shouldn't be an issue for a 7yr old.

You'll enjoy it more than you know when he gets excited about it.

I'd try to find out from grandpa what type of skill level the boy has and what type of gear he's been learning with. Zebco reels are probably the most popular for a little kid learning to cast on their own, but if grandpa has already taught him how to cast a spinning reel then a youth spinning setup would be better IMO. Next question is where and what species will yall be fishing for?

Dont let your kids fish with something you wouldn’t fish with. Best fishing advice I was ever given

I got my son (seriously) started with a fly rod at 7. He has the obligatory Zebco his grandmother bought him, but knows how to cast a spinning rod too. After seeing him fish with all 3, and knowing the type of fishing the OP described, I was going to recommend a spinning rod with a trigger.

Thanks (and to others) hadn't really considered asking him.

Fresh water fish in the Chicago suburbs area.
Don't really know more than that.

Yeah, he has been begging for one lately. It will be something I'm into because he wants to go, might have to get one myself.

Appreciate all the responses, as I knew this was the place to go.

Unfortunately for him he caught a Sheepshead on his first cast this summer and than some type of baby shark later that day, so to him fishing is non-stop action.

The 33 hit the market in the 50s and the 202 in the 60s.

I'm a grown arse man over 40 and my favorite bream fishing rig is a Zebco Ultra Light Classic rod & reel with a beetle spin

With all due respect, a seven year old with a fishing rod is no good unless he has a dad to teach him what to do with it. I’d suggest getting yourself one as well and getting to work!! One of my favorite things to do with my 5 year old.

We can be doing something completely random (like this weekend at a bday party at a local bounce house), and he’ll ask me if we can go home and go fishing. I’m fortunate enough to live by a ton of waterways in south louisiana, so we always have options to fish from the bank

Lake Michigan is in your backyard. Don't hesitate to drive up to Wisconsin or over to Michigan to catch the fall brown trout runs.

If grandpa has taught him how to cast a spinning setup, this would be a good one for him.

LINK

If you wanted something cheaper, look for something in size 30 reel and medium power rod . Medium-fast would probably be better for him because faster action will help him set the hook quicker.

Thanks, I do plan on getting one myself. That is my one concern with getting a more advanced reel, I won't be able to trouble-shoot.
