Realistically speaking, how long is deer meat good in the freezer?

Googles will tell your 6-9 months but come on realistically, how long does it last in the freezer? How old of meat will you still eat?

Really depends on how it’s packaged. Custom wrapped (double wrapped) good for at least a year, vacuum packed year plus.

Steve Rinella (meateater) says he doesn't consider it starting to get good until at least a year and he swears by wrapping in saran wrap and then butcher paper. That man eats a lot more wild game than I do so I'll side with him.

I've eaten 3 year old vac sealed meat and it was just as good as fresh. I think a LOT is determined by how well you take care of the meat from the time the deer hits the ground to the time it hits your freezer.

If it is packaged well, smells fine and doesn't appear freezer burnt, I really couldn't care less what the date on the package says.

This is how I wrap mine, and I've never had an issue. We've pulled meat out of the freezer over a year after it is put up and it's been perfectly fine.

I’ve thought about this for a while bc we rarely finish off a batch before another kill comes, but just ate some ground meat from the 2019 season and it was fine. I have some from as far back as 2017 that never got ate.

I’ve eaten meat that was vacuum sealed 3-4 years old and not noticed any issues.

If it don't look freezer burned we eat it. We will eat oldest first and keep the freezer rotated.

There's no better way to do it. Vac bags are prone to leaks and busting. Freezing in water is a better preservation but it takes up so much room that it isn't usually practical.

That’s ridiculous.

If taken care of properly in a good freezer, years.

We go one year - 18 months on average I bet due to space and our needs.

Properly handled and vacuum packed, years.

I cooked a pork roast from 2018 yesterday for lunch. It was delicious.

Thaw it and smell it. If it looks good (not freezer burnt) and smells good, what’s it gonna hurt?

neighbor had some (not vacuum sealed but well wrapped) and it was 5 yrs old and had no freezer burn, and when cooked, it was very tender and tasted great. if you keep the air from it it lasts very well

Found a vac sealed pack from 2015 in my dads freezer. Was excellent. Had to trim a little bit of freezer burn off
