what is your problem with these?
Its the outdoor board and so i fully expect this to be an unpopular opinion.
I think a fully automatic gun is a gun of war ... and what i mean by that is that the gun is specifically designed to kill as many people as quickly as possible. I don't think its a fit for ordinary society.
Semi auto at least is burst only... sure you can kill as many with a semi as a fully, but its not as easy to do so.
At some point you have to draw a line on how easily people can kill in masses. (Or at least i think so ... some on here believe you should be able to own a nuke).
My personal line is at a fully automatic weapon. I understand everyone has a different threshold and I fully respect everyone's opinion. There are many on TD more informed than me when it comes to rifles. I get that too.

That's true. If our Zombie Apocalypse threat alert system went to IMMINENT then I'd be cool with them.

See if you can find a coherent definition for Assault Rifle as it applies to civilian versions, which are not really "assault" rifles in the military sense anyway since they are not full auto.
Scary looking weapon with higher capacity magazine than is normally allowed for hunting is all they are.
They are fun to shoot. As far as home protection If you think you are going to hold off the trained drug cartel assassins with your army of 1, well that's a fantasy. Get a shotgun and/or a handgun for home defense.
By the way these AR type weapons account for a minuscule percentage of crime so don't let those wankers bs you about that.

An intermediate caliber rifle like 5.56 or 5.45 or 7.62X39 is actually better than either a handgun or shotgun for defense. They have low recoil, low muzzle flip, are easy to maneuver, can be shot with great accuracy and precision, are easier to reload than shotguns, and hold significantly more rounds than either a shotgun or handgun. Intermediate caliber rifles are also very lethal and don't over-penatrate.

Someone gets it.

I bought an AR last year. Was tired of jumping hogs in the woods and only have 4 shots in a bolt action rifle.
It's also a great gun for shooting people with. I hope it's never used for that but I will openly admit that part of the justification I used to spend the money on one is to have firepower that matches those that may want to harm me or my family

Wrong.
Semi-auto is semi-auto, i.e. you have to pull the trigger for EVERY SINGLE round.

Pretty certain he did basically the same thing with a thread about a month ago.

Solid knowledge bomb. I thought semi-auto meant burst. Burst of 3 or 5 or whatever.

The National Firearms Act of 1934 agrees w/ you. Fully automative weapons are obtainable in the US, but are EXTREMELY regulated. I once read that a legally owned fully automatic gun has not been used in a crime in the US.
quote:Nope. As already pointed out, semi-auto =/= burst. Burst would be a fully automatic set to shoot 2 or 3 shouts at a time, fully automatic. Such a gun would also be regulated under the NFA.

I think the one time it was, the gun was registered to a PD

AR's are fun to shoot and great weapons to have in case SHTF.
An AR with several hundred rounds of ammo is a good thing to have in your gun safe at home.

G,
I have not read this whole thread, but I will answer some your questions.
First, I have hunted with a .308 'assault' rifle. I have killed deer, coyotes and wild hogs with great successes. In many states, it is legal if you hunt with a 5 round magazine. Higher capacity is considered illegal vs fair chase concepts. Although, nobody gives a shite if it involves killing hogs.
The constitution includes 'the right to bear arms'. I've read that our founding fathers believed that the people of a union should have all rights to bear arms....in order to enable the general population to "have teeth" behind their beliefs without being unjustly forced into unwanted rules, tariffs or laws by a bully government. Deep down, I believe this. So, as distasteful as many guns may be, I support our rights granted us at the birth of this nation.

Nah, but these pop up from time to time. It's usually progressives who just want to argue.

It is, so what?
I'm not being argumentative just for the sake of it by the way, I'm trying to make a point. Our 2nd amendment doesn't limit types of weapons because they are more effective or not, and semi vs auto is a highly arbitrary delineation.

Again, this seems like a very arbitrary reason to trample my rights.

I can respect your opinion even if I disagree, especially since you've gone out and sought information with an open mind
