Saw a really nice camping vehicle today in Kanab Utah.

Pictures don’t really do it justice. Probably seen at least 5 similar vans out here this week.

Those are really nice and they get way more intense than that. $200k doesn’t even get all the options. Check out Earth Roamers, $500k. I’ve only seen two but they were incredible.

I’ve heard that when you have a problem with the Mercedes it’s a huge problem. It’s not like a local parts store or small shop mechanic will be able to fix an issue. They have to flat bed it to the nearest major city with a Merc dealership. But I still want one!

Eta: yes, they are everywhere out here.

Good vans are a luxury indeed.

Had a white all-wheel drive (I-Beam) Astro back in the 90's that had a slight lift and way dark black glass. It'd go surprisingly far off road. Racks were laminated black walnut and eastern red cedar from the pasture and a roll out awning at times. One of the best features was full 1/4" rubber lining on floor. You could literally hose out it if parked on an incline. Interior was modular with different components that could be interchanged based on activity and number of people. Things like refrigeration, bed, seats, and levels of kitchen. And back door was a split 3 way, where top 1/2 would flip up for dry and venting, and bottom 1/2 open left and right.

Three people could tag-team sleep a 3day Bama-West Virginia trip and still function at work the next day. In peak fall when climbing is best and the Army Corp does draw downs (so whitewater could be scheduled), we'd do a minimum of 3 WVA weekends a month. We had a crew that was paddling over a 100 days a year, while bouldering at least 3 days a week, and still working a weekly 40. A good outdoor vehicle was essential and the right van plush.

Big tree took it out in a straight line storm... that was a bad day.

I like em. I just end up going off-road more than they can.

They’re cool, maybe not 175k cool, but still cool.

You're right about that.

Try $200k cool for a base model. Or $300k cool if you want one tricked out.

Can dodge make one for 85,000?

I’ve seen the Mercedes at Ski Beach and Sugar Mtn.

Also what’s the tip-over risk. I assume that the reason you get a van is you pack it full.

175k for an easy tip over is a giant risk.

I was about to say, I see those things (or similar) all the time. Then I read the first line...

saw a bunch of them when I was out in Sedona. Looked them up and was shocked by the price for seeing so many of them.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have one though. Easier to drive than a bigger RV and really about all you need to sleep comfortable.

Those mercedes diesels had a lot of DEF/ engine issues early on. Not sure if they still do or not. FIL had one, not that nice, more like $140,000 and it was getting 18mpg on the hwy but kept having issues so traded it in for a gasser.

I guess they take them into the BLM and National Forrest lands a lot? I don't really get the appeal as I doubt those can go that many places a regular Class A or Class C can't go? Maybe I'm wrong.

Saw several last week in Durango, Co., along with other brands. I could stay in a lot of places for 200,000.00.

I have a buddy that DIYed his own Ford Transit camper van. It's a fraction of the cost and built out nicely with fridge, cooktop, awning, roof storage, etc.

You can buy a used dodge truck and a truck camper and get it setup for 85k or less.

Those Vans seem nice but I'll take my setup any day for the price. I can stand up and I have more room overall. It's a 4 season camper too so more than likely more efficient in heating/cooling.

Eta....that van could tow my waverunner but it couldn't tow my boat.

I spent two summers in a VW van traveling all over and enjoyed that more than anything else I can think of. There are some serious deficiencies to a VW van, though, and I've been planning what to buy in retirement. I've reached the same conclusion as your setup for best value and flexibility. I want to be able to go on roads that Mercedes can't travel (and something less expensive to buy and fix). And I don't want a full sized RV and tow another vehicle. Once covid finally ends there may be a glut of camper options available on the used market.

Sounds fun but yes, the space in a VW is underwhelming.

I used to date a woman with a diesel VW Westy. Fun but the van was packed for a simple weekend trip and it was fairly gutless. Getting over summit passes was slow going.

I roll coal up those same passes with a boat behind me now

A local dude has the Ford version. Looks pretty cool, has winch, bumpers, etc.

I’d hate to get that mofo stuck.

Eh, we can agree to disagree. If you strictly want off road you maybe right. I think some of those sprinters are 4x4 though, so they are pretty capable.

But I'm pro RV all day long for a true road trip over a truck camper or tow behind. Those sprinters you can 100% stand up in unless you are very tall. The benefit of them over a trailer or camper is that you can get up and pour a hot coffee or use the shitter or make a sandwich while someone else drives. Can't do that with a truck.

Wasn't even referring to off road. Yes, they have 4wd versions and tbh they will get to the spot faster than I will. You can rip the attachment points if you're too rough on my truck camper.

I guess all you'd ever do is a road trip then? I can get into places an RV can't. I can launch a boat a lot easier, even with my camper on.

A search said 67.7".....might work for a lot of folks I know in LA but I'm 6' 2". My interior height is 77". I also have more storage space and a much more comfortable living space. I also have bigger tanks and don't have to dump as often or fill up with fresh water as often.

They have me on that....

But at what cost?

I feel like my setup has the most advantages and I'm a 100k cheaper than a van and I can still use my truck for other things.
