Is this from a legit source? That's a big arse crappie, but MY guesstimate would have been about a pound less. Nice one, either way.

I think.

Look at the first pic. That's a game warden truck and you can see the edge of the scales set up on the table behind them.

As a guy who moved from NOLA to Memphis as a kid, I can definitively state: Dey ain't no sac-a-lait in Tennessee!

It was almost a year before my accent and wording and speech patterns were understandable to those Memphians. Eastern Tennessee was even more strange and confounding speech wise.

Tennessee doesn't even know how to make groceries, use a hose pipe, or that a pireaux exists.

You honestly know 4-5 lb Crappie well enough to tell the difference between a 5 and a 4 lber? The next 3 lb crappie I see in real life will be the first.

Well, obviously not, since this one is 3/4-1 lb heavier than I would have guessed from the photo. But, I have seen a couple over 4lbs, and I've caught a few over 3lbs myself.

Anyway, found this on another forum:

quote:

"Fishing on a local pond in Paint Rock, Tenn. late on the evening of May 15, 2018, angler Jam Ferguson landed the fish of a lifetime when he caught a 5-pound, 4.6-ounce black crappie. The fish was weighed on TN Toad Scales that night, and the scales were later certified and the fish reweighed on May 16, 2018 by TWRA officials. Pending a DNA test, it should be the official new Tennessee state record black crappie, eclipsing the former record of 4 pounds, 4 ounces set back in 1985."

Damn he beat the record by a full pound? That's insane on a 4 lb record.

Yeah, that's crazy. They seem to grow big in ponds though if they survive long enough to not get eaten. One of my best friends in high school caught what was probably the biggest crappie I've ever seen out of a pond. It was 4 lb 12 oz. It had probably been living off of bluegill for years. I'll bet he still has it hanging on his wall.

The Louisiana record is 6 pounds. Before it could get certified as an official world record the people eat ate it. ( Only in Louisiana right) the question was whether it was black crappie or white crappie, even though it would be world record either way

My grandfather use to catch 21/2 -3 pounders every year on lake Claiborne in the spring during their spawn. I would plead with him every year to take to the damn to official scale as would be top ten fish in Louisiana every year, but nope he just ate them lol
