If you want a stupidly good deal... Rmax 4 seater. Great sxs that no one buys.
I know of at least one that got bought, I just can’t justify that much power. People don’t understand what doing 45 in a sxs on a logging road feels like until they’ve done it.

There is a huge difference between doing 45 on a utility side by side and 45 on a rec unit.
The difference is 45 on the ute feels like 90.
The 1000s can cruise at 60. And they have the suspension to deal with the bumps.

You will pay around $12-14k for a 10 year old used bike or just spend $20-22k for brand new.
I looked at Honda, Polaris, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Canned Ham. I know a bunch of guys that have each of them. There are examples of pieces of shite and completely reliable ones of each brand. Just go drive some and pick one you like. I already had a Honda and the transmission was shite so I was gonna give another brand a chance. Mule and Yamaha were dogs. I can’t stand going slow. So it was down to Polaris and Canned Ham. There’s a Polaris dealer and service shop about 5 minutes from my house and I felt like the Polaris was smoother and rode better.
I got one of them Ranger 1000XPs, threw a Gilomen tune and clutch kit, and religiously change all the filters and oils/fluids. It’ll do 70. If I’m gonna have a toy that breaks, I’m gonna at least go fast and have fun while carrying a bunch of people and gear and dead woodland critters.
So far so good on it though. No repairs.

What size you looking for? I might be selling mine before next hunting season.
Mine is 2015 570 Ranger- has roof and windshield.

I’ve been impressed with the Polaris 1000’s suspension, older I get that’s what I’m willing to pay for, and it eats up windrows without letting up on the throttle. That’s the biggest difference between it and the 570 full size, the power difference isn’t noticable until you really weigh it down, but the 570 will knock your teeth out. I didn’t notice a huge difference in the rmax and polaris at the speeds I’m actually gonna hit them at, but the rmax can do that shite at 70.

Have had Polaris and Kawasaki and I'd go with the Kawasaki Mule Pro. Polaris is faster but on our ranch roads in central Texas the mule is just as smooth and is built sturdier with more metal and less plastic. Polaris lost an engine at about 400 hours which cost $3000 to rebuild and it was well maintained and not abused. Polaris is a little more fun to drive fast but mule goes about 48 mph and has been bullet proof. Our second mule has 4000 miles on it in 1 year and is going strong

I also recommend the Mule. Mine is 6 years old and it’s been a workhorse.
The only thing I’ve done to it is replace the carburetor

If you kill the engine multiple times, in any machine produced in north america or japan, the problem is you, not the machine.
Except for the fact that my brother bought it. Gave up on it after spending thousands on it. I took it and went through the same thing, I have it to my dad and he had exactly the same experience. No mud riding. Mostly hunting club trails that rarely even had mud. Not to mention all the rest on here with similar experiences.
I’m sure there are those that have had good experiences with them, but having been through it myself and knowing many other who have also been through it, I’ll stick with my original assessment that rangers are garbage.

Buy new. Take a look at R/T power sports in Brookhaven. They have a good selection of Polaris and Kawasaki. Prices are great and no BS hidden fees. Even have the 4 seater Polaris for under 15k. I bought a Polaris from them last year, Great experience and the machine runs great.

I've been looking at the Defenders, looks like a really well built machine! Which one did you go with?

WTB a used Polaris ranger.
When I was in your shoes what made sense to me was #1 stock suspension travel & a close #2 is cubic ft in the vehicle. <-- Add a cooler and box for tools/rain gear ext. they fill up fast. Polaris Ranger offered the most vs. the competition at the time. Go see new ones in person, some of the brands, interior layouts are wonky/useless.
Buy new even if it's new/used. <-- Buddy fueled by Corona's sank mine over the snorkels with under 20hrs. winched it out dried it out cranked it up and good to go <-- sweating bullets none the less. Buy new!

It will either be flawless or a massive pile of shite.
When canam finally works out their quality control they are going to be tough to beat.

I have a 2023 Can Am Defender x-mr. I like the higher stance for crawling over logs and such on our hunting property. Have used the winch several times to drag deer up steep hills. Our property is sandy so no deep mud but I do like having the extra power of the 1000 when it is loaded down with bags of corn going out to the feeders. I have the glass windshield that flips up, the poly rear window, and the plastic roof. Engine runs like watch and is surprisingly quiet. Transmission engagement is smoother than my previous Polaris. Overall seems to be really well made and thought out. I really like that it comes from the factory with easy to access zerk fittings on the bearings and bushings
No issues so far with two hunting seasons and some joy riding.

I just bought a Yamaha RMAX 4.
Yamaha reliability weighed heavy for me.
The rear seats can be removed easily too for more hauling capacity for gear.
The downside I’ve seen so far is the lack of accessories compared to Polaris and others.
Came close on a Honda pioneer.
Heard bad things about Polaris. But they are super popular here in Utah. I’d never buy a used sport machine.
Think buying a used Mustang GT. You assume it’s been pushed hard.

Polaris redid the clutch in the 2025 1000 and 1000XP models and it shifts a world smoother than prior years. It comes factory standard with 29” tires, roof, and winch. The 2025 has a 2 year warranty and service intervals are every 200 hours instead of every 100.
If I were in your shoes I would look at one

So when you buy out of state, they give you the paper work to register and get a title. So if you don't want to pay taxes , you just don't get a title? Or does the state come looking for taxes and suspend your license? lol
If there's a way to avoid the taxes and fees on a new one, that'd be great!
