Pocket knife for a kid suggestions.

Getting my 13 year old his first decent pocket knife. He's obviously in school, so not an EDC, and hopefully something he'll keep up with.
My Grandpa gave me a three blade Uncle Henry a long, long time ago. I'm thinking he'd rather have a knife that is less traditional than what I grew up with.
Right now I'm thinking something like a Ken Onion Chive. I prefer having the blade lock on his fist assisted open knife.
I keep a Spyderco on my key chain, and the Manbug/Ladybug have harder VG-10 steel over the Chive's 420hc (not a deal breaker for a kid, but might be a good idea.)
Any others I'm overlooking that are close to the price range ($35 - $60) of these?

A cheap one because he's going to lose it or forget it in a field somewhere.

Exactly why I suggested a cheap, all stainless steel pocket knife. May not have the edge holding of VG10 and better steels but it's tougher, easier to sharpen, and resists corrosion better. Kids (and many adults for that matter) tend to use knives to do things they aren't meant to do, like pry things.

The heirloom type will come later. Kid can't keep up with his tally-whacker if it weren't attached to him.

Look at Browning knives. They are not expensive and have decent blades.

You're his dad. I know when I was that age anything like that my dad gave me was gold. I was devastated earlier this year when I lost the knife he gave me as a young teenager. Was a little single blade buck knife exactly like the 3-blade he carries. Get him something useful and practical and he'll love it.

Got this Kershaw at Cabellas for my 11 year old. Decent little knife. Assist with locking blade.

Never give a knife away. Make him give you a quarter for it or it will cut your friendship.
