I thought it was the other way around. Maybe not though.

the best home defense weapon is a shotgun.
two schools of thought
a double barrel with #4 on one side and 00buck on the other. #4 will not go through a wall so it will not get somebody you dont intend to get. 00 will stop a freight train at close range.
or...
a good youth model pump loaded with either of the two. Youth model is better for cornering bc of small size and you can still shoulder it, making it much better to point. also gives you more rounds than a double gun.
in self defense a handgun is what you use to fight your way to a long gun.

Isn't the ranger t a politically correctly named black talon?

Some good info here re: specific loads and guns. OTOH, I'm usually skeptical about non-referenced data (writer is listed only as "anonymous", plus I don't see a date so some of the info may be outdated, although appears to have been revised 8/11).

I like Massad Ayoob's writings, but this is 6 years old.

Cliff's notes version.
The 9mm round now acknowledged to work the best is a 124-grain to 127-grain high tech hollow point at a velocity of 1250 feet per second. NYPD, with some 30,000 officers carrying this type of ammo, the Speer Gold Dot +P 124-grain, is happy with the performance of its 9mm service pistols. Ditto the Orlando, Florida, Police Department, which uses the Winchester Ranger 127-grain +P+ in their standard issue 9mm SIGs.
This is a whole dissertation, including ballistic gelatin testing.

As for me personally, I carry 115-124 gr +P Speer Gold Dots or Remington Golden Saber in my 9mm. They're usually more easily available than some, function well in my gun and have a good record.

It depends.
from the Hornady website:
Critical DUTY™ loads are “full power loads” designed to function full-size handgun slides. These loads are NOT optimized for short barreled, concealed carry style handguns. They will deliver standard recoil during firing.
Critical DEFENSE® handgun ammunition was developed to provide the best performance for DEFENSIVE or PERSONAL PROTECTION SITUATIONS and is the ultimate choice for any short barreled, concealed carry style firearm.

Basically, it breaks down like shooting .357 from a snub nose - don't. Get the right ammo for the gun.

Lots of documented under penetration, under expansion all over the internet, the new Duty is supposed to correct a lot of that.

I actually shot 3 of my defense rounds (box of twenty + 17 round magazine). I was pretty surprised by the difference in accuracy as compared to target rounds.

Not exactly. The Ranger-T is the latest iteration (evolutionary version) of the Black Talon. It's much improved over the original.
CorBon DPX has comparable terminal ballistics --- the only stuff that appears to demonstrate consistently (slightly) better expansion is the Federal HST.
The Hornady ammo that everyone gets so excited is good stuff --- but not as good as the Ranger-T and the HST.

Wasn't the black talon THE 9mm self defense round when it was out?
