Just got back from the miramar area and saw very few sand fleas.

I think the largest shark ever caught in Florida was from there and someone caught a mako there recently.

I watched a 700 pound Mako caught at the Panama City pier about 15 years ago. I am sure it is not a record but that was one impressive shark. Dude fought it for about 6 hours.

My thought is that once you put your toes in that water, you enter a food chain that you are not at the top of.

That will definitely make you think once or twice about swimming out to the second sandbars.

I get the heebie jeebies when I get out about chest deep, especially when the water is murky. I know the odds are low, but not being able to see, and knowing what's out there is a bit unnerving.

I mean, I still do it but I don't love it.

I stay in Jetty East every year. Catch the sand fleas and use them on the bottom.

In hopes that your son might catch some fish: Along the beach I would try a pompano jig with a gulp bait strip for scent. You will catch too many trash fish (catfish) using shrimp. Bump the jig slowly along the bottom and maybe catch a flounder or red. Try chunking a spoon along the beach and along the jetty for reds. You never know what you are going to catch fishing around that jetty. With that said, it's getting hot and it's not really the best time of the year to fish. There's always lady fish that will hit just about anything and can be fun for a youngster to catch.

I’d keep one of those ladyfish that are always biting. Cut a steak about the size of a bar of soap, (too big for a nasty catfish) get it down on bottom and wait for a monster Redfish to show up on the outgoing tide.

If you haven't arrived yet then you will find out it is a good spot to fish but plenty of others will be fishing too.

Spanish and ladyfish will entertain your son all week long. Get a spoon, gotcha, or anything you can cast as far as possible. Use a heavy leader.

As said sand fleas or shrimp on the bottom is solid too. In between the 2 jetties and fishing off of them is a solid spot for a bull red.

Going at the end of July. Thanks for tips. Sounds like I can do the normal setups I do for inshore.

I've never cleaned popanos.. Are they good eating?

Pompano? Not really. They make good crab bait. If you get your hands on some I’ll take it off you.

Pompano are prized table fare. Grilled, baked, fried, all good. I always scale mine because the scales are tiny and almost fall off, but you can leave them on when grilling or baking.

I’ve never fished that side of the jetties... but I’ve caught some monster redfish on shrimp (both live and dead) on the other jetty. I’ve also caught some AJ and one beefy mackerel which was a hell of a fight in that current with the falling tide.

I stay in Destin Pointe many times each year. You cant fish in the lake near the beach, but you can in the pond further back. Its fresh.

The lake near the beach is a conservation area.

Watching this guy real in what looks to be hard heads. Catfish of some sort the way he struggles to get a grip on them. Keeping everyone he has caught. Orange beach
