Guys, looking to buy my dad a new pellet grill for Christmas. Suggestions on brands and what I should be looking for. Pros cons?

Thanks

I have a GMG. It is always dead on with temps and makes excellent food. The one issue is that they dont properly prep the metal before painting and the paint starts flaking off from surface rust underneath. Next time I will likely buy a Rectec. All about budget though. Had a Traeger and it was a real POS. Could never complete a cook.

Traegers are overpriced. Get a Rec-Tec or one of the other “mid-tier” brands. I bought a trawler right around the time these other brands were starting to make their mark and I wish I got something that had a seat plate or could get highs that 400.

I’d give those gravity fed charcoal grills a look too.

I've had a recteq Bullseye for almost a year now and I love it. I great as a grill (can hit Temps close to 800) and pretty decent as a smoker.

I’ve had no issues with my Traeger. It’s been great. I’m a green egg guy, and the Traeger has been a great addition.

I have a Traeger, a GMG and I just bought a SmokinBrothers PP36. These are made in Missouri. It all depends on your budget

I second the Rec-Teq bullseye. I just bought one and love it so far. Super easy to use. Doesn’t use a lot of pellets.

Big Green Egg and never look back. The pellet grills all screw up and you have all kinda crap to clean. BGE has minimal stuff to mess up. Buy the Digi Q temp control and you’re in business son!!

I've been using my Traeger for about 3 years now. No problems at all, other than when I let my pellets get wet. Hit it with the shop vac and we were right back up and running, zero problems since.

Cast iron grates or a full cast iron insert are worth it for searing, IMO.

You didn't give a budget so if you want the best its gator pit pellet grills. They make a few different styles.

RecTeq RT700 Bull is what I have. It’s a fantastic smoker.

Get a Kamado with BBQ Guru controls. Plus you can use it during a Power Outage minus the Guru.

I don't like mine overall. Very convenient, easy to use but the taste they put out is just meh.

I guess the bar was too high on taste from using a BGE for years.

I have a Pitt boss 820 and love it. Doesn’t put out as much smoke above 250, but a smoke tube fixes that.

Don't go cheap. I bought one on clearance from Sams, and I don't think it cooks very well or the temps are accurate.

I have a Blaz'n Grillworks Gridiron. But it may be out of your budget, I spent about 1500 on it at the time and it got it with the extra racks. Hand built in Nebraska. I've not had a single problem with it in the 3 years I've had it.

That is out of most peoples ranges though, so I recommend Green Mountain Grills or Pit Boss Grills to most people. Can't go wrong with either one IMO.

I just bought a Pitt Boss Platinum and want to throw it in the garbage as it is horrible. I might sink it and use it as a fish attractor

I have a Pit Boss 820. It's great for a brisket or searing steaks and tuna.

I was a bit apprehensive about the finish being able to withstand the salty environment. After 2 years of use the finish still looks great.
