Whippoorwill; when you hear one sing it means that you are going to die soon. You found a dead one and picked it up…. Thoughts and prayers.

Same family but think it is Chuck-wills-'s-widow.

The orangish by its eyes.

Very similar, though.

Chuck -will’s-widow more likely.

The overall rufous pattern, especially in the tail, and the fact that the wings appear to be more pointed would lead me to the same ID.

Hard to say for sure from those pictures, but chuck-will's-widow seems to be the right call here.

Odd group of birds these nightjars are. One common name that appears in some field guides for the family is "goatsucker", so named because of an ancient belief that they sucked milk from goats.

Old people come up with weird shite sometimes.

I found a live one perched on the hood of a car in West Baton Rouge parish many years ago, I figured they had moved on like the meadowlark.

Chuck Will's Widow.

These birds were commonplace on my grandfather's place in St. Tammany when I was a kid. I haven't heard one in many, many, years.

I'm near Marion. I found it right on the road. Apparently near sunset they forage right on or near the blacktops & can get hit by oncoming cars.

Pointed wing tip was the give away to me. Also, the Chuck is way more common in the given area.

I’m pretty sure that’s a Chuck-wills-widow. I can hear one by the house every evening and every morning leaving for work. I’m out in Abita springs. I thought it was a whippoorwill until I did a bit more research. I’ve also been hearing bob white quails during the day out in the yard. Haven’t heard those in years!

Big mouth because they fly around catching insects at night.

Very cool bird

I’ve been living in the same place for about 20 years. I heard quail in the woods behind my house Saturday. First time I can remember hearing them since I’ve been here.
