I got a nice deal on an 80s Smith and Wesson model 1500. Had my sights set on 6.5 creedmoor but this gun seemed like a great deal. Just wanted some opinions on the cartridge.

Look up the ballistics on each cartridge. Anything beyond that is simply campfire bullshitting.

I bet 90% of deer killed in Louisiana are within 300 yards, I doubt caliber etc etc matters that much.

Just find something you like.

I've been shooting the same 30-06 for 20 years and have never had an issue with it.

I have a 300 short mag I rarely take out of the safe.

What are your plans for the gun? Deer hunting in the south?

It’s a great cartridge that can easily take pretty much any North American big game.

The only issue you may possibly run into is if you want to run some heavy bullets and the twist rate on the barrel isn’t fast enough to stabilize them.

Great flat shooting caliber but shoot a bullet that stays together like Accubonds or Barnes.

Excellent cartridge.... bullet is fast and can tend to be a meat bomb on short yardage shots. Like stated above, shoot premium bullets that stay together and you will be happy.

You got lucky. The 7mm Rem mag is a much better round than the Cripplemore.
Years ago, David Morris, of North American Whitetail fame, went with the 7mm mag. It’s an outstanding round for hunting mature bucks. One of the most versatile rounds ever produced.

Its a great caliber. Really versatile. If I hunted with one I would be shooting 175gr nosler partitions assuming my rifle liked them

I have a winchester super grade model 70 in 7mm mag and I love it.

However are you suggesting 6.5 creedmoor isn't going to take down most deer around here?

I see many people using it on larger mule deer. Please explain.

I was under the impression it was also a great flat shooting round.

Blood dog men say they go on a lot of calls due to the 6.5 Creedmoor these days.

No he said much better as in ballistically and versatility.

A 7mm is a better overall cartridge for hunting. It's been here for a very long time and has a great bullet selection.

If he wants to shoot paper at long range and hunt he should go with the 6.5 only because the recoil of the 7mm won't be fun after awhile.

6.5x55 swede has more performance than the creedmoor.

OP, Get which ever one you want. Personally, I'd get the 7mm. It will be my next rifle.

I've put my dog on a bunch of 7 mag deer. I like the caliber a lot, but it seems people who can't shoot have a high affinity for it also.

It's not because of the gun. It's either the bullet or the shooter.

I have 3 friends that track with their dogs. All 3 said the tracks they go on most are by 3 calibers and in this order
1. 7mm Mag
2. .243
3. .300wm

The top 2 don’t surprise me... 7mm is fast and people in the South love the glass doll CoreLokt. The .243 is considered a “kids” gun so probably not the most accurate shooters. But the .300wsm does surprise me, hell i did t know it was that popular and the one guy i know has one swears it’s a hammer.

I wish I would have kept notes when we started this.

If I had to guess, my top 3 are probably .243, 7 mag, .30-06

I dont know many .300 shooyers

I really thought this was bullshite until I joined the LA blood tracking Facebook page.

Seems like nearly ever ask for a dog is from a 6.5. Most of those guys shoot precision or match hunting ammo, which I'm sure is most if the problem.

It could be due to it being the new thing and draws in New shooters? Maybe?
