Over the past few weeks, my older dog has not been able to jump to his favorite sleeping spot and has been using the bathroom in the house which he has never done in the past, not even as a puppy. I'm planning on a visit to the vet soon but if there is nothing that can be done I'll plan for the worse. Has anyone humanely taken their dog down at home so he can go in peace at home with us?

If you're just talking about shooting him, then yeah. Use a .22, anything bigger can make a mess at close range.

Please don't take my post as insulting you or your situation. Just trying to lighten the mood around a dark topic. My first one was hard, but we have had to put down cows, and horses too. It's a part of it, if you never have an animal, you won't have one die or have to be put down. That's just the way it is.

I really don't know how you would do that other than a bullet. Do you really want to do that? No way that I could have. I took both my Lab and Dachshund to the vet and it was very peaceful. Just stay with them and comfort them. God bless and good luck.

If the animal is suffering, you feel differently. A bullet is quick release.

When I was a kid, the vet came to our house to put down my brother's lab.
The dog loaded up like he was going hunting; the vet put him down right there in the truck. Then my brother drove him to the camp and buried him.

I kind of picked up on that too. I've never heard of it, but I guess you could give him some sleeping pills and put him in a deep freeze. That sounds way more messed up than a bullet though.

It's tough. I've done it myself twice and I hated it both times. Give him a steak before you do it

The vet is not coming to your house at a cheap price. There is nothing wrong with, humanely, doing it yourself if you want to.

If you have a good relationship with our vet and don't live far, they will probably come out for a reasonable rate. No way am I shooting a my loyal dog that has lived in my house for its entire life.

OP, talk to your Vet. They just might come to your house. My daughter does house calls if she knows the person that has been using her practice.

Putting down a buddy with a gun, yes, I could do it, but that would be the last option I would do.

Vets use a few shots to do the job. They start a IV and put them to deep sleep, then stop the heart.

Yea really don't want the .22 method especially with my kids. I'll see what the vet has to say.

+1,000,000

My vet has come to me to take care of it, last one was in the middle of the night, I talked to him daily for a week deciding on the right time.

I once watched a family member use a .22 to put down a beloved cat that was dying. It did not even penetrate the skull at point blank. A hell of a bad time ensued.

If you want to do it at home that's your business but please use plenty of gun.

Old dog struggling to jump = arthritis which is treatable. Old dog urinating in the house could be incontinence which can be treated along with a host of other issues that can be treated. Get some answers from a doctor before you listen to these clowns talking about shooting your dog. If you can't afford a vet to humanely euthanize your animal then you shouldn't have pets.
