Ok, I bought a complete PSA lower about two years ago and finally decided to do something with it. I know it is the low rung of lowers. I am willing to throw $7-800 or so on the upper itself and build the lower into a shooter. It will be used mostly as a varmint coyote firearm and needs decent accuracy.
Should I go 20" on the barrel? I will be buying a decent (to me) scope on top. I won't be walking around whole lot with it. Probably will be buying a bipod to interchange between it and the .270.
or.....should I just buy a CZ Varmint .17hmr and call it a day?

Is the scope included in that $7-800 upper budget?

I am sorry - no, it is not

Yep and they also tried to out modular it too. I just don't see anything really replacing the M4 outside of evolutionary enhancements unless NATO decides on a caliber change.

I personally would out some of that budget towards a trigger upgrade for the lower. Then I'd put a hefty portion into a nice barrel. People say stainless steel is more accurate but I don't have first hand experience with them but I do shoot high power competition and everyone has a stainless except for my broke arse. I would definitely go longer than 16". I just put an 18" on my build but I havent had a chance to shoot it yet but the reviews are good. I'd say if weight isn't an issue go with 20".

Earlier in the WOT, several firearms manufacturers strove to make an improved rifle compared to the M4. Hk made the 416 and 417 and FN has the SCAR. Couple others tried their hand but little to zero success like Bushmaster/Remington ACR.
The Scar 16 was discontinued in 2014 because the Army saw no distinct advantage over the M4. The Scar 17 is widely used. I have a buddy who is an Armor in the Marines. He says the MARSOC guys love the SCAR 17.

Thanks, the $7-800 is just the upper itself. I don't mind putting another 150 or so in the trigger. I just bought the lower to sit on.

So they are both discontinued now, that's why prices are up?

The problem with battle rifles is they are heavy and so is the ammo they shoot. A lightweight rifle that shoots light weight ammo, which a soldier can carry more of, means a they can move faster and stay in a fight longer. This is why the M16/M4 family of rifles will not be replaced as long as we are shooting cased ammo. That platform is 50+ years in the making and nothing has come along that does it better.
plus it's simple design is easy to maintain and already extremely modular.

Its fricking stupid what FN has to do to get them into the country. Some of the parts are made at their factory in Columbia SC. They ship those parts to Belgium where the gun is put together sans the folding stock. The gun is shipped into the US as a sporting rifle that cannot accept a magazine and is basically a single shot. FN machines away the mag block and installs the folding stock in Columbia. Thats why these frickers cost so much.
FN is filling Military contracts for the SCAr at the moment. They are coming into the US but only a few hundred a month. Its supply and demand.

Some of that has to do with the 1968 Gun control act but the real damage was done by Clinton in 1998. Back then Clinton ordered the ATF to reinterpret their sporting purpose clause. Now granted back in 1989 Bush had an executive order doing the same thing. That's what thumb hole stocks and no bayonet lug imported rifles first started as they had to have 10 or more US made parts out of a list of 20. In 1998 the ATF expanded by saying any semi auto that could accept a magazine that held more than 10 rounds was unsporting. So any imported rifle you see like the SCAR or AKS have quite a few hurdles to overcome.

And why we can't have chinese made M1A's.
Which im pretty butthurt about.

Which added weight, complexity, cost, and, in many cases, accuracy and durability issues. The M4A1 will be around for decades, improvements will continue to be evolutionary rather than any serious design changes. DSL coatings will eliminate the need for lubrication almost entirely, metallurgy and manufacturing changes will improve barrel life and accuracy, ammunition improvements and optics will enhance hit probability at range.

I impulse bought an American Tactical ar 9 today. I'd been wanting an ar9 for a while but they've seemed scarce. Walked in today to get some mags and they had just got one in. They said it took glock mags so I was sold. Anyone know anything about them?

Thanks for that detailed breakdown...

This. You should have bought a QC10 receiver and built your own.
