I'm ready to get those fancy German "portable vice" ones next time around, $60 or not. Whew. I thought I was going to have the bolt catch pin just hang out a bit on my first built. I moved on and did the trigger guard. It went better, so I said, "You know what? I just might have to hit it harder."
Hitting it harder did the trick. Everything I read suggested it would be the opposite of that. I still have to to the pistol grip, safety and extension/buffer/stock, but I think that the hard part is behind me. (I know - phrasing.)

14.5 may be dumb but I like the look of a 14.5 middy with front sight block.
I could care less about pinned a2 flash hidder.
May be my next build. Still debating on middy or carbine. Love the mid look but the carbine seems to shoot the cheep stuff better.
If it can't shoot something then it is useless

I don't think it's "dumb" just limiting if it isn't a SBR.

I'm warming up to it as an option for my lightweight build. Even though the 14.5 was designed for the carbine system, a see a sizable number of folks who are very happy with their 14.5 middys.

If I end up going that way, that's what I'm going to do (and I couldn't care less, either)- now you're looking at BCM right? That is their proprietary A2X(I think that's what they call it) - to get it to the legal length - it is an elongated version of the mil-spec A2 flash hider.

Picked up my psa pistol lower today.
Orderd radical firearms 10.5 quad upper , shockwave, and Daniel defense sights.
Will consider sbr'ing it in the future
Not a fan of registering a forearm though. Will see
Will order a bcm kmr alpha 15" soon for my 16" rifle. Replacing the 12" quad rail

I almost stopped by your shop today but I didn't have enough time

If you don't buy the upper and lower complete, can you build it cheaper?
You can build an AR15 cheap as shite. Less than $400 is doable nowadays. This is a $299 Palmetto State PTAC kit with a $20 carry handle rear sight. Not counting tools I have less than $350 in it. It goes boom every time you squeeze the trigger. It won't win a 600 yard match but it rings steel at 100 yards with the best of them.

You still off college or do you have an actual shop now?

I built a lightweight rifle, I have it posted somewhere in this thread. Let me see if I can find the build list I posted. Found it:
Finished my lightweight build:
UPPER
BCM 16" ELW Fluted upper with 13"KMR
BCM gunfighter comp
BCM BCG/charging handle
Unity Tactical vert handstop
Inforce WML
Magpul MBUS polymer sights
LOWER
TN Arms polymer lower
V7 lightweight takedown pins
V7 lightweight bolt catch
V7 lightweight titanium grip screw
V7 lightweight titanium buffer detent/spring
V7 buffer tube
V7 lightweight castle nut/endplate
ALG ACT trigger
BCM mod1 grip
BCM gunfighter stock
After adding the sights the rifle still comes in under 6lbs and shoots fantastic. I can probably change a few things on the upper to shave a little more weight off, like the V7 port door and rod, a V7 titanium BCG and the charging handle. But the BCG just is not cost effective at this time.
V7 weapons systems is a good place to look for anything lightweight. It was started by a former Noveske employee (Joel I believe is his name) who ran the N6 program there.

To each his own, I'll never own another 14.5" ar ever.
I had a 14.5" midlength upper and if ran fine with every ammo. I do really shoot expensive ammo, I like the cheap and dirty stuff.
I'd put and adjustable gas block on before pinning.
Without the ability to change parts and a permanently attached muzzle device it just doesn't make sense anymore for a total savings of 1.5".
Also if you plan on a suppressor the pins/welds could interfere with the mounts so keep that in mind.

I'm good with a pinned A2 flash hider. Muzzle devices seem to come and go like all fads lateley. Probably one of the biggest in the AR world. Just put on the trusty A2 flash hider and be done. I'm not into swapping and changing and buyiing more.
But if you want to custom your AR from time to time, then yes a pinned muzzle device will cause issues.
14.5 vs 16 to me is for looks only. I own a 16" already and just looking to mix up the the bag of guns I have

I don't see the point in going with a pinned 14.5". If I want to go below 16", I'll just get a stamp and go with a 11.5".

I found an article regarding .223 vs 5.56. It's supposed to be geared towards the novice, but it goes in depth with chamber pressures and barrel manufacturing, etc. The guy did his own testing and research and then wrote a pretty decent article. I'll admit my brain started to feel a little numb after a while. Sort of like when I tried to learn about rewiring my '68 C10.
5.56 vs .223 - What You Know May Be Wrong
Sorry if Germans, but 10000 + posts = no way I'm looking for it.

How do I tell what the twist rate is on my barrel?
It's not stamped on there. It's an older, before they sold to whoever owns them now, Bushmaster heavy barrel national match postban(no compensator) model.
