How do I tell what the twist rate is on my barrel?

I'm 95% sure it's 1:8 or 1:9 (20"?).

However, there is a way to find out for sure.

Empirically determine your barrel's twist rate

Key quote:

quote:

You need a good cleaning rod with a rotating handle and a jag with a fairly tight fitting patch. Utilize a rod guide if you are accessing the barrel through the breech or a muzzle guide if you are going to come in from the muzzle end. Make sure the rod rotates freely in the handle under load. Start the patch into the barrel for a few inches and then stop. Put a piece of tape at the back of the rod by the handle (like a flag) or mark the rod in some way. Measure how much of the rod is still protruding from the rod guide. You can either measure from the rod guide or muzzle guide back to the flag or to a spot on the handle. Next, continue to push the rod in until the mark or tape flag has made one complete revolution. Re-measure the amount of rod that is left sticking out of the barrel. Use the same reference marks as you did on the first measurement. Next, subtract this measurement from the first measurement. This number is the twist rate. For example, if the rod has 24 inches remaining at the start and 16 inches remain after making one revolution, you have 8 inches of travel, thus a 1:8 twist barrel.

Propogandalf might have a quicker way.

He or Carson can probably tell by looking down the bore.

Ace you were putting a LPK into a stripped lower? Did you use any of the special tools or just stuff you had laying around?

When I bought my fist lower I knew nothing about putting one together.
I found a youtube video and grabbed some tools laying around. Nothing to it. Building is a stretch. More like putting round peg in round hole. As long as you do it in order and take your time. Some tape helped in preventing scratches. But in the long run scratches will come anyhow.

I bought roll pin holders and punches. Brass punches were underkill. Steel punches and hitting it harder got me past the tough spots. I did ruin a roll pin, but that was taking it out. I have the pistol grip and safety selector in now - that's the first time I used a tool I already had (flat head screwdriver for the pistol grip.)

Most of the older Bushmasters were 1:9. Seems like most of the Colts back then were 1:7.

Did you use any of those fancy vice blocks or could you get the roll pins in without that stuff?

Are you guys using roll pin holders like this...

LINK

And then roll pin punches like this...

LINK

It seems like the roll pin punches should be all you need, but I've never attempted to do a lower build before.

I just bought a smaller sized punch set (I think you need 1/8 and 1/16 but nit positive) from home Depot and beat them in with a hammer. Use painters tape on your receiver so you don't leave any marks. Lots of videos on YouTube.

I used the Wheeler lower block to drive the trigger guard roll pin. But, that's not a vise block. It lays on its side on the bench.

I used one of the blocks to hold the lower in a vise when I drove the bolt catch roll pin. Some of the videos I saw had folks using an appropriate sized block of wood.

The vise and blocks worked as expected.

You don't need a vise block but it sure is helpful. I bought something very similar to this for ~$20. Holds the lower. Holds the upper secure enough for me to put 80ft-lbs of torque on a upper without damaging it when using both upper pieces to clamp it in the vise. Can also just use the lower part of the upper clamp to hold the upper upright to install optics, hand guards, time the brake, build the upper, etc. Even after the builds they get plenty of use. I thought it was a good $20 investment.

I bought the sandwich style upper vise mount to torque my barrel. Only tool I bought. I used channel locks and needle nose for all the roll pins for lower and gas block and used razor knife and Allen key for pivot pin detent.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a starter tool kit to build an AR-15?

For the roll pins, watch this video (I'm highly likely to do this for future roll pins, because of my experience with the first one.)

Knipex on roll pins - a better way?

Sorry about that. I was closed yesterday for an out of town wedding. Someone else from here called, I believe it was ChatRabbit, looking to stop by as well. Trust me, I would have much rather been at the shop all day than a +1 with the ol lady at her friend's wedding.

Just an FYI, the shop will be closed next weekend as well, but I will be setup at the Kenner Bruh gun show all weekend.

I do, call Bushmaster give them the serial and have them tell you. If they don't know then use Ace's link to determine. I would bet good money it is 1/9 though.
