Anyone have any good suggestions on purchasing a new washer and dryer? Mine have seen their better days

I just know I hate our highly rated front loaders. I've seen lots of other front loader hate on other boards here.

I'll second that. Do not get a front load.

I guess I’m in the minority for liking a front load washer. Well, my wife does. I never use it. Don’t even know how to.

Just bought the washing machine a couple of months ago. It’s a Samsung. It was one of the highest rated on consumer reports. The dryer is still the old one and it’s still going strong. Had to replace a sensor on it and a drum bearing but they were very easy to do.

One thing on a front load, when it’s done washing get the clothes out and leave the door open.

Isn't that true for every washer?

We have a LG front load washer and dryer going on eight years now. Works fine...you do need to clean it every so often but I think that's true with all of them.

I think those spider brackets for holding the drums are made to corrode after a few years. Those old school whirlpools and maytags lasting 20+ years was bad for business.

We got the cheap Kenmore top load washer and front load dryer a few months ago, and I've been happy with it so far. We just leave the water setting on "deep fill". Otherwise, it doesn't put enough water in.

Oh, ours have not failed or broken. It's that when working correctly, the washer is the worst at actually washing clothes of any washer I've ever used.

Buy a speed queen and it will be part of your children's inheritance

If you’re looking for a basic top load washing machine I’d go with a GE just because parts are cheaper and readily available. You’re gonna get 7-10 years out of one tops now days. Dryer doesn’t really matter they make them basically the same as they did 20 years ago and it’ll definitely outlive your washing machine. I work on em so you can take my word for it. Unless you wanna spend 5k for a pair of quality commercial units I’d buy a basic GE top load.

We bought some high end Samsung front loader for the house and hate it. It’s been serviced twice in three years. Meanwhile, the cheap Amana washer and dryer we bought for the camp five years ago works like a champ and has never once been serviced.

The top recommendation here will likely be speed queen. Even from the resident washer and dryer expert, Napoleon

I'll also chime in that I hate our front load. We run it on the self cleaning cycle monthly, always leave the door open, and there is still constantly mold and mildew inside the gasket. And the clothes never come out feeling really clean. We have had ours for 8 years and it hasnt broken or anything, but it is for sure the first and last front load washer. I'm actively rooting for the day that the machine breaks just to have a reason to get a new one.

Our next washer will be the biggest relatively inexpensive ge topload we can find.

We had a Whirlpool front load washer that had to be replaced after a couple of years. I don't remember what broke. We replaced it with a highly rated Samsung top loader. A year and one service call later, we found out it was on a recall list. They sent us a check after we sent them a copy of the receipt for the Speed Queen top loader we got. It doesn't play music, and it doesn't have four or five different temperature settings, but it washes our clothes well.

On the front loaders:
We didn't just leave the door on the front loader open. We had to take a towel and dry all of the rubber off after each load. If we didn't our clothes smelled bad. Our bath towels and wash clothes started smelling very bad. Jeans will soak that musty smell up too. We bought Affresh, and started using it. Took advice from OT posters and washed the towels and jeans in hot water with nothing but baking soda and used vinegar instead of fabric softener. After seven or eight washings, most of the smell seems gone.

Those front load machines have all of the bells and whistles, but are too much trouble. What led the manufacturers to believe we wanted a piece of sh*t that required buying extra products, and required regular cleaning to clean our clothes? Who the hell wants to clean their washer after ever load? It's supposed to get your clothes clean, not make them smell like a wet dog.

My washer and dryer flooded in Harvey so went to replace and I was told by an appliance guru that has been working on appliances since he got out of the USMC that Speed Queen was the best so I listened and bought. Hard to turn down advice from a retired Gunny.

I second the Bravos XL. We have had them a year so far. 10 year warranty on motors and tubs.

That said, our kenmore lasted 15 years with very few problems until the drum started leaking. It was a front load.
