So, I'm in the market for a new truck. I'll be receiving an allowance from my company, which should cover anything up to a 3/4 ton, but probably not anything in the really expensive trim levels if I go that big. It's been about 7 years since I've owned a truck, and with the added supply-chain issues, I'm totally out of my element.

I will require 4-wheel drive, but other than that, the rest is my preference. I could go small and get a Tacoma, Canyon, Frontier, etc., and just pocket a chunk of the allowance. However, there has been some talk between my wife and I about purchasing a travel trailer in the very near future, especially since I'll be traveling much more often for work. Work will provide a set rate per diem for the days I'm out of town. I know for sure that we don't want a large camper, and nearly everything we've been looking at is half-ton towable. Then again, a 3/4-ton truck gives us more options and I'm sure a much better experience.

If we decide to buy the camper, am I nuts for considering the Ram with the 5.7L Hemi? Nearly all of the campers we're looking at are around 8500 GVWR and have hitch weights that shouldn't be an issue. However, I admit that I have zero experience hauling a travel trailer, so I don't really know how comfortable it would be pulling a camper that size with a half-ton. Because of this, I'm thinking, "Just buy the damned 3/4-ton and a small fifth wheel."

My friends of the Outdoor Board, I freely admit my ignorance and humbly ask your assistance. I haven't kept up with truck technology, trends, and reputations. I am at your mercy.

ETA- I'm sure Toyota isn't budging off their prices, but what about the American manufacturers? I'm pretty sure Rangers and Mavericks are in demand, but I'm thinking about half-ton and 3/4-ton specifically.

Do they pay per month or is it like a lump sum. I would see whoever has the lowest interest rates. I think Ram had 0 in certain models.

It's a per month allowance + fuel.

I've been seeing ads lately for 8500 or so off MSRP for F-150s, so it seems like they are starting to give discounts again. I believe it was for 2022 models though, so they may just be trying to clear the lots of old inventory with the discounts.

No way in hell I would buy a ram 1500. I dropped my buddy off at the ram dealership this morning to pick up his truck. They called him this morning and told him the parts needed to fix his issue are back ordered and they have no estimated time on when it would be fixed, so he could just pick up today. Also, my brother had one that was garbage from day 1. Ended up totally shitting the bed with very low miles on it.
I’ve heard good things about the GM 1500 diesels. Probably going to be my next truck and shouldn’t have any issues towing a smaller camper.

It’s not the best time to buy, but if you’re in a pinch then you have to.

I’d have to say get the 3/4 ton and look at gas engines if you don’t plan on towing that trailer more than 6-7 times a year. Unless your hauling heavy, like construction/farm equipment, just stay away from diesels, gas engines have come a heck of a long way.

The 1500 level trucks are great for the avg boat pulling, but when you start adding weight, the 3/4 ton helps secure your confidence. If you really want to feel safe, the 3500 level really is the ticket.

We have one diesel truck for the farm and stay away from them for everything else. Emissions have come a long way but they still break…the diesel repair bill sucks too. The fuel bill on diesels…plus DEF…ugh.

Yeah, that's what I was worried about. Just because a truck can pull it, doesn't necessarily mean that I'll be comfortable doing it. If I go with a 3/4 ton or bigger, I'll be looking at some of the more basic trim levels and gas engines unfortunately.

This perception needs to die. Diesel 3/4 tons are fricking stupid. The engine weight severely cuts down on the available payload. You are spending a whole lot more money for what amounts to a less capable vehicle than a gas 3/4 ton.

If you need a diesel, you almost certainly need a 1 ton dually. Diesel 3/4 tons make zero sense.

Gonna respectfully disagree on that. My current truck is a 17 F250 xlt 4x4 with the 6.7.. it’s by far the best truck I have ever owned. We have a 36 foot 5th wheel that we take on trips about once a month. It’s handles it without any struggle and is a pleasure to tow with.
The truck i had before that was a 14 Chevy 2500 with 6.0 gas. It couldn’t get out of its own way towing a trailer. I definitely wouldn’t feel comfortable taking it to the Smoky Mountains pulling our camper .
My truck has 149800 miles as of today and it’s been relatively trouble free. I’ll pass it on to my son in a year or so and get another either just like it or very similar.
End of hijack

How much payload margin do you have left with that? The whole drive train is definitely better for towing, but you get hosed on the weight. Once you start talking 5th wheels, you oughta have a dually.

My 2500 ram only has 2,200 lbs of available payload. Any 10,000 lb GVWR 4x4 truck with a diesel engine is going to be seriously payload limited and a lot of the 3/4 ton trucks you see on the road dragging 5th wheels are very overloaded. 3/4 ton trucks should be gas burners.

My pin weight is 1615 and the demco auto slide hitch weights 270. That leaves 1634 pounds if the charts are correct. The truck handles that with no trouble .
I regularly pull a small komatsu d20 dozer and it handles it quite well also. Just my experience with this truck.

Who is selling for $8500 off MSRP? I’ve seen $1000 off 2022’s. I would love to buy a 2022 F-150 for $8,500 off.

I live in the Houston area, and if I remember correctly it was Planet Ford on the north side of town.

If I was in the market I'd be going F250 on a 3/4 ton or
GMC AT4 on a 1/2 ton.

As much as I've griped about my Tundra it's been a good truck when I haven't tried to use it as a battering ram but I'm just not a fan of the new design.

Give it a little time. With interest rates where they are and dealers lite starting to fill up, pricing and incentives have to get better.

I have a 2021 Silverado 2500 LT with the 6.6 gas burner. I can get 17-18 with 35" tires no level or lift. Pulling a 30 Ft camper on flat ground can get 11-12 MPG. I bought mine almost 2 years ago and paid 51K for it. Costco had a 1K rebate at the time on Silverado's and I was able to use a 3% coupon for GM Supplier discount.

A few things I would suggest. If you are actually going to be on the road and living out of a camper, get something bigger than you think. If you ever worked on the road are gotten stuck in a camper after hurricane repairs, a 17 foot camper gets real small real quick.

Second, I would absolutely go with nothing less than a 3/4 ton and might even go up to a Dually if I'm towing campers more than 4 hours at a time. I just towed a 20 foot cooking trailer on a 3/4 gas from New Orleans to Freeport TX and it wasn't fun.

Check out Bergeron Auto in Metarie for a Ram. I got $11k off on a grand cherokee from them yesterday. Also Mark Dodge in Lake Charles.
