To be called the "Ruger American" (Don't they already have a rifle by that name?)

Wow, this is pretty cool. Had no idea Ruger had plans for a new handgun. I like how often they come up with new ideas. I've always been a fan of Ruger.
Initial thoughts by the pictures:
1. I don't know why they changed the magazine from the SR9 design. Or maybe it's just the baseplate that changed and the mags are just bare stainless. Regardless, I think they would be smart to keep the SR9 mags as the standard.
2. The trigger appears to possibly be metal. That would be a pretty big change in the polymer handgun world. Very few of them actually have a metal trigger.
3. That takedown lever is huge but at least it looks low profile.
4. The backstrap design looks pretty nice - very M&Pish. Ruger has always had nice thin grips on their polymer guns anyway.
5. The rear serrations look pretty tiny and shallow but maybe after handling one I'll feel a bit differently.
That's all I've got.
It's a great time to be a gun owner!

Didn't even notice that part. Nice!

Man that's a good looking pistol. I love my SR9. Its the best shooter. I might have to get one of these.

Not a big fan of Ruger center fire autos but that low bore axis looks sweet.

On the Ruger website now. They claim a short trigger pull and reset, and less recoil.

But no manual safety --- blatant design defect

Not adopted by any military or police agency. Must suck.

Any idea on project price? I was about to pick up a SD9VE to keep in my work car from Academy for $299. Might wait and see about this.

the sell sheet says $579
I imagine that means about 500 retail so top of the market for polymer pistols

Get a Ruger 9E for about the same price on gunbroker and you'll be much happier. The 9E has the same mechanics as a SR9, it's just not as pretty.

The model I looked at was a 10+1, so it got removed from my short list quickly. I never looked up the specs to see that I was looking at a Massachusetts complaint model. Will put it back on guns to look at list.
Thanks

Must suck.
No one should ever buy a "new to the market" firearm for self-defense. There are plenty of handguns with established track records for reliability to choose from.
Of course there are plenty of folks who always want to buy the "latest & greatest." More power to them.
With any manufacturer (and especially with Ruger) I'd wait a couple of years to see what defects/modifications/recalls come to light. Even Glock has been guilty (with their Gen 4 guns and the G43) of shipping them out and then having to admit that modifications were needed.
p.s. Even if you buy an "established" model, you ought to shoot 400-500 rounds through it before trusting it for SD.
Just my $.02 worth.

Not that they necessarily suck but there will most likely be deficiencies in the design that won't come to light until the market starts to saturate.
I think after running a few hundred or 1000 rounds through one it would probably be trustworthy for SD.
As for the handgun, the initial release is in 9mm and 45 without the manual safety. They will have a manual safety model soon after. I would imagine a compact will be released later if the design is a hit, but I'm sure that will take time.
Personally I like seeing Ruger step up and continue to release products after listening to customers. I bet this was a response to people saying they hated the manual safety and the mag disconnect safety. They did the same thing with the LC9 after people complained about the trigger and the safeties with the LC9s Pro.

They have one in the rental case at Precision.
Cue the Precision bashing
