From the LDWF page:

LDWF extends its gratitude to Governor Jeff Landry for signing Act 272 into law, as well as the Louisiana State Legislature and Representative Dewitt for the passage of HB 802.
recognizes the ethical responsibilities of hunters to recover game they’ve taken and provides for a legal method to do so. Licensed hunters or trackers can now:
Pursue a mortally wounded deer (legally shot) using lights and a blood-trailing or tracking dog.
Dispatch the deer with a handgun if found alive (excluding LDWF Wildlife Management Areas).
To prevent misuse, certain rules apply:
Only one dog per tracking party in pursuit of the wounded deer.
A second dog allowed for deer retrieval training.
Tracking dogs must be on a handheld leash or use a GPS tracking collar.
A mortally wounded deer discovered alive after legal hunting hours may be dispatched by using a centerfire handgun with a barrel no longer than six inches and a caliber between .25 and .45.
Licensed hunters or trackers can follow a mortally wounded deer onto private property if they have landowner permission.
This law takes effect on August 1.

I’ve always thought this was a gray area in recovering deer.

About time they got rid of the leash law. Zero people followed it. It’s impossible to have your tracking dog on a leash going through the woods

Man, I went to do that to a little forky, and he ripped the horn out of my hand so fast I thought my fingers were gone. It's in the cool story thread

Yes but I have had a huge buck I shot in liver stand up in front of my. It was quite terrifying. Pistol would have helped. He is in my wall now though.

It wasn’t gray, it was just a joke. Your legal choices before this if you came up upon a wounded deer were to back out or stand there and stare at it until daylight.

The gray area is the mortally wounded part. It will definitely be mortally wounded after it gets shot with a .45

No drones? What's the reasoning behind not allowing them? Scouting for other deer?

This is what it reads on drones.....
quote:

The use of unmanned aerial vehicles UA commonly referred to
as a drone to aid in the recovery of a wounded deer is prohibited.

So its legal to recover a dead deer with a drone.

Correct. They don’t want people using a drone to scout or harass deer and say they were tracking one.

I’m guessing that’s the intent of limiting it to handguns with a limited barrel length. Not that you couldn’t get within handgun range of a deer at night, but that’s gonna be a lot harder than with a rifle.

I agree the mortally wounded part is ambiguous. Bay dogs are gaining popularity that can catch and hold a deer even if it’s not truly mortally wounded. There was a very large buck killed last year near where I hunt in MS and the rumor was that the deer was barely injured, bedded down fairly close, then was shot crossing a road after the dog jumped it. I don’t know if there’s a way to regulate that away.

was this the one in SW Mississippi that is a potential record? I heard the same thing from some folks in the area.
