Went out looking for a new truck yesterday and was floored by the prices on new trucks. After looking at a F-150 v8 anywhere from 40k XLT to 60k KR, I am now considering a used GMC on their lot

What are the OB's opinions on 5 and 10 yr old GMC trucks with 100k+ miles? 5.3L V8 in both trucks, with GM's reliable transmission.

Those numbers are meaningless. My numbers on my last truck were something like:
45 sticker
39 advertised "sale'
33 negotiated deal.

Tell them you're going to go buy in Houston.

Yeah I think Ford gives you like 10k off sticker just for walking in the door

Hit em with the Mak Haik Houston reference and get another 3-5k off

then say frick it, I'll drive my beater a couple more years and leave.

They'll call you back and throw in 0% financing, no money down, free weathertec mats, spray in bed liner and a HJ from the obese accounting clerk in the bathroom

That's better than oil changes for life, right?

Still 33k for a truck seems crazy. But then again 20k for a 5yr old government bailout truck with 100k miles may be worse.

The engine itself 5.0 is a badass. There are more and cheaper parts for the 5.3

Well if you are going to get a loaded truck, expect loaded prices. These are not single cab bench vinyl seats with a crank window and a 180hp engine any more

My thoughts exactly. I love when these cats go and look for a new truck and get shocked and appalled about a ‘17 F-150 KR costing 50k. WTF are they expecting?

The engines themselves are pretty bullet proof. It's everything else that you have to be worried about...

I had an '04 Yukon XL. Had it for about 5yrs and about 4yrs in is when everything started breaking.

There was a thread the other day on the OT asking what’s the highest mileage car you’ve ever owned. The 5.3 made many appearances and the 5.0 made a few as well. I think either engine will give you significant life but the 5.3 may barely edge it out.

The problems with F150s have never been the engines (V8) but always with the tranny's and the electronics

The 5.3 is one of the most reliable engines ever dropped in a pickup imo.

My last one had 276k on it and still ran like a scalded ape and the transmission had zero issues.

You can come really close to that now. I bought a Platinum in Dec for 12k off, 0% for 72 months, plus what I wanted for my trade in.

I would go find a 2017 King Ranch or Platinum and start throwing out your offers. You would be surprised.

The problems started when they went to displacement-on-demand (DOD) in 2007. It added a layer of complexity to the engines that really wasn't needed. It was all to meet efficiency standards.

The most reliable 4th gen small block chevy motors (referred to as LS motors) was from 99-06. When DOD was added in 2007 it added the risk of dropping a lifter, which is exactly what happened in my 2010 Yukon Denali. But after disabling it along with the V4 mode, my vehicle runs great and has over 130k on the clock.
