I know…Ford v Chevy.

For you guys that run these trucks (let’s say 2024 forward), what are your thoughts on quality, performance, etc?

Well I dont have to if you will do it for me.

For the OP - No appreciable difference between them in terms of reliability or cost of ownership from what i can tell but I dont have a lot of experience with either one. I would just stay away from Ram for a few more years. The current Cummins is a totally brand new engine and IMO took several steps backwards from the previous 19-24 engines, which themselves were a very major step backwards in reliability to the 2015-2018 models.

I'm in a 24 7.3 and other than missing the torque and engine braking, I'm content. Bud has a 24 denali diesel that has been in the shop since early Feb. electrical gremlins. Nothing to do with the diesel.

Downshift, has Ford fixed the fuel pump in them yet?

They have made a lot of improvements in filtration and Bosch hardened the pump some more. I think the 19+ models have been doing much much better than prior years. The 24+ engines are supposedly excellent, but I dont have a lot to go by.

Watch Daves Auto Service Centerville Utah on Youtube. The amount of new diesel engines in his shop for repair is rediculous. Cummins, Powerstroke, and Duramax. They are all junk. Buy a gasser.

I’m seriously considering a gas 250 in near future. It’ll be for me to haul small equipment (skid steer/mini excavator) around home within 50 miles one way for small dirt jobs with a couple times a year to bring same equipment to camp in MS which is roughly 150 miles one way.

I’ll keep my 2014 150 fx4 for my daily user.

I have a couple of the current ford trucks with the powerstroke. One is a 2017 f259 with a little over 200k miles. I bought it new and recently gave it to my son. I’ve been very diligent with maintenance and haven’t had any issues until the last year. We had the transmission rebuilt and put a DCR pump in it after the dreaded low fuel pressure code. No other issues in almost 10 years.
My newer truck has the 6.7 also but mainly gets used for towing equipment. It’s only a year old and has been trouble free as expected.
My daughter will be driving soon and pulling her horse trailer to local events. I’ll probably try to find her a 17-22 F250 with the gas engine.

Who did the transmission rebuild? Happy with it?

If you don't absolutely need the diesel get the F250 gasser. Most reliable engine on the market currently from a design standpoint.

GMs gasser is also not bad but it has a HP fuel pump so a little more complex.

Action transmission in Central did the work. He’s put about 8k on it since it was done and no issues. Those guys do great work.

I have a Cummins with the 68rfe. No issues yet but I think a transmission problem is when and not if

I’d been very meticulous with changing transmission fluid and filter every 30k. It started slipped from 4-5 and 5-6. Just went with a full rebuild with that many miles . Hoping between that and having the CP4 replacement he will be in good shape for awhile.

The big issue is with the Ford/Chevy developed 10 speed (10R40) transmission. The 6 speed (6R140) is just as bad.

Surely you do not mean the ford 6R140 that was in the diesels and 1 ton gassers for about a decade? That was the best transmission ever put in a pickup truck. The 10R140 that Ford is using now is also very good.

The 6R140 is prone to overheating, harsh shifting, and fluid leaks. It's not bulletproof.

The 10R140 is so bad that Allison pulled their name from GM. Ford and GM developed one of the worst 10 speed transmissions ever made.

The 6R140 is not bullet proof but it’s a really good transmission. Nothing is entirely bullet proof now days.

The 10R140 and 10L1000 are not the same transmission. Parts are not compatible between the two. Multiple sources have torn them down to show the difference. The Ford is better built. In 2023, Ford improved the 10R140 which has shown better reliability for the past 3 years.

Lastly, Allison pulled their name because they wanted more money. Hence why Allison is back on all Duramax GMs. GM did not redesign the 10L1000.

Allison is not back on GM 2500's or 3500's. GM paid to use their name for their 10L100. Allison does build their transmissions on 4500 and 5500's.

The Ford 10 speed transmission is slightly better, but not a whole lot.

This is the first time ive heard anybody say anything bad about the 6R140. Its a great transmission.

You are mixing up the 10r140 (fords HD 10 speed) with the half ton truck version.
