No I wouldnt. I can get a good shot at any doe on any given weekend. Dont get a perfect shot? Wait for the next one that is probably only 30 minutes behind.

A buck to go on the wall? If I think I can kill him I'm shooting. If a buck is standing still facing me at 100 yards and I have a good prop ill take my chances, I know I can make that shot. That's why I'm there. Yall can all GTFoutta here with the pompous great white trophy buck hunter attitude.

Did the OP say how far this shot was? As I posted in this thread earlier, my only shot on a deer facing me was 25 yards. That's not a low percentage shot whatsoever. I don't think anything less than 100 yards or so is either. As long as you have a rifle that's sighted in.

Ballistic tips will leave you chasing deer thru the woods often. They look cool and the idea is attractive, but the actual results are horrible. I ditched those silver tips and went back to a regular ole Remington Core-Lokt, the results are great.

As far as the deer...either you grazed the low brisket/shoulder and he is out there in the wild limping around, or you fatally wounded him and he's under water in the creek. That's a tough shot, but still doable, I like to aim high in that situation.

Your actually willing to possibly wound an animal to possibly boost your ego and hunting prowess?

Nothing he has said makes me think it’s about his ego or hunting prowess. He just wants to shoot bucks, and the positives of taking the shot outweigh the negatives, in his opinion.

Y’all seem very concerned about the ethical and moral implications of it. Just know that there are a LOT of people out there who judge the entire enterprise of killing animals to be horribly unethical and immoral.

Those people would gladly completely deprive you of your right to hunt and would feel every bit as justified in doing so as you feel in judging your fellow hunters here.

Be careful when you start drawing lines.

Some people would say the hunter is behaving immorally when he hunts at all.
Some would say it’s when he hunts fenced land.
Some would say it’s when he uses modern weapons.
Some would say it’s when he doesn’t eat everything he shoots.
Some would say it’s when he climbs in the stand even though his scope got bumped in the truck on the way and he’s not 100% sure the rifle is still on.
Some would say it’s when he takes a certain kind of shot on a good buck.
Some would say it’s when he uses dogs.
etc etc

Who is right? Who is willing to prevent others from hunting as they see fit?

Not a big fan of ballistic tip, but I have some friends that are big believers in them (very accurate), but they mostly make every shot in the neck.

I love the results of the core-lokt's but they do not group very well. I have since switched to the Winchester Power Point that give good results and shoots alot more accurate.

As for the straight on shot, I'll take it because I have all the confidence I can make the shot, especially if I feel the deer will not make the turn and pose for the perfect shot everytime.

I shot four deer last week in Texas 2 were quartering to me and the other 2 were head on. The two quartering to me ran about 30 yards with blood everywhere (blew out the backside of the ribs) the two i shot head on fell straight to the ground. The danger in the head on shot, is a small hole in and usually no pass through, so there will be no blood trail if he runs.

Now when I'm with my son, I don't let him take the straight on shot.

you are saying you dont like trophy hunters but if a trophy buck walks out you are willing to adjust your morals and make a "less than ideal shot"(your words)

it sounds like you consider big bucks special and treat trophies differently than other deer which is the definition of a trophy hunter

that is the irony

Ok you got me. Me dum u smart.

I'm not arguing semantics. When I get that shot, I'm taking it. The vast majority of hunters will take it, and they are not wrong doing it. I've shot deer quartering hard away, running, through branches, at hard down angles, far, etc and I have been successful far more often than not. Yall keep believing what bucknasters and the internet has taught you, I will keep enjoying myself in the woods and killing deer. There is a huge difference between wreckless and difficult. What we are discussing here is nothing but slightly more difficult.

Nobody takes that shot with a .243. That’s irresponsible.

Gotta shoot them in the head with that one. If he’s facing you gotta put between his eyes.

Shoot something that has more nuts than .243 and you dont have to hit them in the head

If you need something more than a .243 you are probably a terrible shot.
