Slow morning, 9:45 only deer of the day comes out. Nice 9 point I’ve been after. Only gives me one shot before he disappears inside the tree line, he’s facing me head on. Put it at the base of his neck and take the shot. He immediately buckled and falls back in the trail, kicks a few times, then still. I look at him through the scope, give him roughly 4/5 min. And then I stand up to rearrange my chair that I had to maneuver to get the shot off. I hear and see him get up and run a dead sprint through the woods and disappears. No blood where he originally laid, we give him a few hours then fan out in the direction he went. Randomly stumble upon blood 100 yards away. Continue to follow blood trail for 625 yards (GPS) till we hit the big creek and another lease.
Did he make it?

Update: deer made it. Caught him on trail cam on lease last night. Think I caught him low in the brisket and just shocked him. I was shooting a 270 Winchester short mag. For all you “pro” “low percentage shot” folks out there the deer was 40 yards. Typically I shoot all my deer in the neck broadside or not. I took a shot I’ve taken 10-15 times before and never had an issue. All in all your all entitled to your opinion. Happy hunting.

Hmm. That’s a tough one but there’s a chance.

Buddy told me basically the same story about a neck shot that I never would have believed if I didn’t see a trail cam pic of the buck about a month later with a big bald patch and a bullet wound on the deers neck. Deer looked fat and happy.

In other words there is a chance.

He may be in the creek. Get a dog on him.

with him facing you with his head down you could have caught one of his antlers. Ive heard of deer being knocked unconscious for a bit from being shot in the antler. Maybe you hit and antler and grazed him further back explaining the blood.

I'd put a dog on it as well. Ya owe it to that deer, if you can.

What bullets? I ask because I recently had a buddy with me that was shooting a 6.5 with some highly sophisticated bullet that splintered in a deer. First deer shot at 18 yards was not a problem. Actually found bullet fragments in the meat. Next deer at ~60 yards fell on impact. Got up and ran away. No blood. No deer. Guessing it exploded on impact and didn't penetrate deeply.

Told him to throw those things away

It’s a low percentage shot that should not be taken.

I was guessing you were using silver tip until I read on down. My father in law used to use those things and had this happen numerous times. He wouldn't change bullets and swore by them. Had alot of blood trail issues with these bullets. A neck shot facing you should drop him in his tracks and leave him there unless you hit the brisket. I prefer the soft points like core lock which tend to expand

These loads are not for close distance how far was he? I did the same on a 143” a few years back and wound up getting buckshot in him 8 hours later. He would have died(I think) but the bullet never had time to expand.

My guess would be you hit close to the spine or as said skull and basically knocked the deer out or temporarily paralyzed it. It finally came too and bolted. Whether or not it was a fatal wound is hard to say.

Bullet types really only matter for questionable shots. If you shoot a deer in the spine or heart with anything it’s gonna die and quickly.

Did you get a dog to track?

You shouldn't have taken that shot. If you haven't tried to track a wounded deer with a dog after taking an ill advised shot, you're an irresponsible hunter.

Base of the neck do you mean throat patch or base of the neck right over the brisket??

I’d change low percentage to unethical. OP really didn’t give us enough details, but if you aren’t shooting at vitals, you shouldn’t be shooting.

On some level I understand taking somewhat questionable shots to fill the freezer, but this was a trophy deer OP had apparently been chasing. Hopefully he’s kicking himself and spends the next several days looking for this deer on the ground not in a stand.

Agreed.soft point is the way to go. Dumps all that energy instead of poking holes.

For further explanation. Head was up. White patch on his neck. Dog tracked him all the way to the creek. Creek was full. Brought the dog around to the other side, he’d act like he picked it back up but then would just keep doubling back.

If you shot at the white patch and the deer left!!! Then that deer is alive. That shot is a high risk high yield shot, more than likely grazed a vertebra caused it to be stunned and after a few minutes it came to an ran off.
any of the bad things that kill a deer in that spot spinal cord/windpipe/artery would have killed it on impact!!!
Learn from it an try to put it in the lung heart region next time!!!
