FWIW: While listening to sports radio here in Tampa they had a popular Tarpon/Snook guide on air. The question was posed about what brand of boat is best for the bay.
His response was pretty unconventional. He said bottom line boats are made of "fiberglass." He said the real meat & potatoes as far as boats are concerned are the electronics and how they are installed/fitted/warrantied. His driving point was, find a boat in your price range at a dealer known for service & do biz with them. He commented on how a poorly fitted boat by a poorly run dealership can make even a simple fix a real nightmare. He never pointed in anyone's direction good or bad. I know the Capt. has a ton of sponsors so hearing that boats are fiberglass and not pointing to a Hughes or something similar was kind of interesting. Good luck!

Upfit can definitely make or break the boat. My old mans predator had a piss poor upfit and while it's served us well for 20+ years, i had to rewire the whole thing last summer and it was a nightmare.

Xpress, G3 and Excel can get you close to that price range in the 22ft aluminum arena.

Personally, I've been working with a fabricator on a set of plans to have a customized hull built. Looking at about $40k for a hull built to my specifications.

Our trusty old 22ft bay boat is on its last leg, and I want to start looking into some new bay boats in the 21-24ft range in the ballpark of 35-40k max.

I'm thinking that after looking at prices you discover your old trusty boat is actually in not that bad of shape.

Is frontier the official boat of the OB now? Kinda like 1911s, yetis, honda ranchers and f-150s?

not sure if anyone has said but you can get a 21' Mako with a 150hp Merc and trailer from Bass Pro for $35K. Not a bad rig. Maybe not what the old Makos were but still a good product.

Well suggesting Hewes is pretty good advice. Look at 15 year old Hewes, Maverick, and Pathfinder boats. Majority are still in great shape and last through several repowers.

From what I saw at the boat show they looked like the real deal. Never ridden in one.

My coworker has a tournament 23'. F250 pushes it good. very clean and fit/finish has been solid. He hardly uses it though the flush mount simrads are I priced one 2 years ago and it was $55k. I was interested in their 21' too but the dealer never had one for me to put my hands on.

I have been very pleased with my Frontier 2104. 200hp and all the goodies (hds gen 3, jl speakers, sonic hub...shite like that)i was mid/upper 40's. You can get a new one with a 150 in your budget especially if you install the simple items yourself.

Id say figure out what and where you will be fishing. Find a layout that fits your needs and wants.
My 2014 is a lighter (1800lb) hull same as the pure bay and blazer bay hulls. These will get in shallower water and move faster. However running out 30 miles to get snapper isnt as comfortable. I can fish in 15-18" of water depending on the bottom softness.

The heavier hulls (Triton, skeeter (i think) and sportsman) will ride better to get snapper but your shallow capabilities will suffer. You also will want the max horsepower

Thanks for the feedback man. We don't do anything crazy, just fish around the Shell Beach/Hopedale area as well as the Lake / Rigolets.

Like to get in the marsh a good bit, but nothing crazy.

I like the Frontier 2104 a lot, it looks clean, and efficient in terms of storage.

I was looking at the Sportsman Island Bay 20 but I really don't like the layout/storage. Seems lacking.

If you go with sportsman go with the tournament edition. Island series looks terrible.
My boat does it all. I easily fish reds in the marsh and ive been 35 miles offshore. Its a great boat for south la. Storage is great. I dont have shite laying around getting in the way. i hate the console live well on any boat but oh well. No built-in ice chest means i can use whatever size chest i need that day. Trim tabs are a must (on any bay boat) F200 pushes 3 guys, full gas/gear 50mph. I consistently average 4mpg. i installed Xi5, VHF and powerpole myself to save some $

Saw the new 40th anniversity bass tracker the other day. At 10k its a pretty sweet rig. I dont need much more for bass and panfish
That is the best deal I have seen likely ever for boats

16 foot boat, trailer, 90hp 4 stroke, live well, decks, trolling motor, storage compartments, under 10k
