So I might have an opportunity to go on a pack hunt this fall. Even if it doesn’t work out, new guns are never bad. So looking for a lightweight rifle that’s easy to pack but a quality rifle. Looking at shots possibly 150-200 yds max.

Suggestions?

I have a Kimber Mountain Ascent that I would bring over any of the custom guns I have.

First two bullets are usually touching and the third it starts to open a bit probably because of the pencil thin barrel. If you can find one that shoots I’d grab one.

Mine is a 280AI

Need this information, as well as budget.

Tikka t3 in appropriate Caliber is never wrong.

If going NW, I’d go with a Model 7 300WSM.

Yep. Should’ve lead with that.

Budget isn’t as big of a deal. I don’t want anything stupid expensive but I’m willing to spend some money

Savage 110 ultralight in 28 nosler. Comes with a proof research carbon wrapped barrel and it’s hard to beat an accutrigger. The gun weighs 6lbs. I wish I would’ve known they were going to release that gun 6 months after I spent double the money on a nosler mountain carbon that has the same barrel as the savage and weighs the same.
28 nosler will be good for mule deer and really good if you find yourself needing to take a little farther shot. I’d put a leupold CDS scope on that rifle and you’ll have a light weight rifle that’s capable of taking any game in North America at any range you feel comfortable shooting.

I’ve killed 4 mule deer with my tikka 7 mag out west and have been very happy with it. Shots ranged from 150-500yds. Shoot nosler 160gr Accubonds and they are devastating.

150-200 yards max and mule deer means you can probably go .308. I’ve been eyeballing the Bergara Premier Canyon in that caliber. It has a 20” barrel and I think they are a little over 6 lbs. There is also the Mountain model. It’s not threaded.

If you want a little more umphh, I think you can get them both in .300 Win. Mag.

Browning X-bolts are never a bad option, also.

200 yard max means you aren’t serious about Western hunting. There’s a very real chance your trip will come down to a 350 yard shot at a steep angle with a strong crosswind. Become proficient out to 400 yards before you head West.
My Weatherby Mark 5 Ultralight 257 magnum has killed a bighorn ram, antelope, mule deer, and an elk out West. There’s a trade off with light weight and it’s usually accuracy. Learn to shoot off your pack. Bring a rangefinder and quality binoculars.

Lots of options out there for very light very nice rifles if you want to spend a little money.

If you're willing to spend the money, a NULA in caliber of choice is the Cadillac Mac daddy of them all. Weatherby backcountry titanium, kimber 84 mountain ascent, various Christianson, the ol standby Tikka t3 lite, sako finnlight, the list goes on and on.

As far as caliber goes, .30-06 is never the wrong choice. It's not the sexy choice anymore, but it's more capable than ever with the great bullets out there and the recoil will still be tolerable in a featherweight rifle. .30-06 and 300 win mag are still the kings of North America versatility

The stupid bolt handle that cuts your hand and the fluting on the bolt are so annoying. The bolt fluting makes that gun bot smooth at all. They are nice and light but as carson said, accuracy on those guns is just so variable.
