Long story shorty brother in laws best friend wants to buy my side by side. Guy is also a pretty god friend of mine as well.
I haven't driven it much last year or so and decided I'd get rid of it.

I told him the price I needed, which is what I owe on it, which is less than its worth.
I knew I had to take it to the shop to get a couple things looked at, anyways I find out today it's $1200 in repairs.
Which means I'll be in hole $1200 and not have a ride anymore.

Question I have is, is it shitty to tell him I need more for it based on unseen repair bill of 1200 bucks?

I'm almost willing to half the cost and sell it to him for 600 more than I previously said.
Outside that I think I might should keep it and just pay the $1200 and sell later.

Help? Suggestions?
I just don't want to look like a dick.

tell him you don't feel comfortable raising the price and that due to the repairs needed you can't sell it for that.

I think a split is fair. It's better than him buying it and having to spend the $1200 himself. Show him the repair bill and give him the option to still buy at $600 more.

You sound like you did the right thing by bringing it in to get checked out before you sell it, so just tell him you told him the cost you owed on the bike, but that you took it in and it needs a good deal of repairs. He can either renegotiate with you to just cover the cost or take it as is and let him deal with the repairs himself. Unless you made any guarantees on the bikes condition you're totally in the clear.

I don't think there is a wrong move here.

Just tell him the situation. If you can't take the $1200 haircut, don't. If you don't want to take the $600 loss, don't. Just be honest about it, he'll understand. Better that than to bullshite him.

This is the only answer (screw the $600.) If it was me, I'd explain that it went into the shop to make sure things were straight (which would be S.O.P. for me) and they said you've got a $1,200 issue on your hands. Tell the dude you don't want to hang it on him, but somebody has to pay for the fix.

If you're selling it to him for less than it is worth, you shouldn't take a hit on it for the repairs. <---- that last sentence is exactly how I would present it to the buyer, as an honest take-it-or-leave-it statement. If he doesn't like the deal, shake his hand and tell him you owe him a cold beer for his time.

He should know going in it will always need repairs.

What is wrong with it to warrant 1200 in repairs? Seems like a pretty significant repair bill, no?

He might be able to do the work himself. Show him the estimate. Tell him you will sell it to him as is for your payoff. I personally wouldn't pay $600 for somebody to take a S x s off my hands unless I really needed to get rid of the monthly payment. If that is the case, you know what it is worth to you and can negotiate accordingly. I think splitting the repair cost in half is MORE than generous.

I'd let him know that you had it checked and x-y-z is wrong with it. Can't go any lower on the price. Leave it up to him if he wants to buy it still or not. I would think a lot of people would be able to fix that sort of stuff themselves for a lot cheaper unless it's a major frame part that is damaged.

Not too much wrong for that price. Hell I had a full service performed and changed an LCD panel and the bill was $550 in a Polaris ranger 500.

Clutch replacement and full service on my current John Deere gator 550 ran $790

You're already cutting him a deal. Just disclose what needs to be repaired and see if he still wants it for the pay off price. If he doesn't sell it to someone else.

Let's see here.

Y'all agreed on a price (x). I assume your buddy thought it was in good working condition.

Turns out, it actually needs $1200 in repairs.

Therefore, you should sell it to your buddy for: =x-1200.
