I want to reinvigorate my old model 7. It’s a 308 I got for Christmas when I was 9 in 1992. I never could shoot it well. It is very lightweight and kicked pretty good to 9 year old me. I haven’t shot it in decades at this point. It has a cheap red field scope on it. I’m looking to replace it with a Leuepold 2x7x33. Any other recommendations? I also need recommendations for mounts and rings. I would like to keep it light and use this gun in climbers, off the ground, and situations where light and short would be beneficial.

Vx3 2.5-8x36 is my favorite all purpose deer hunting scope. Ultra light, ultra clear.

probably one of the best hunting scopes you can buy:

Leupold VX5 hd 3-15x44
I'd look at putting a rail on it with some good rings.

I was going to say that, but I don't think they make them for a Model 7 because of the 1 hole rear. Maybe Talley one piece base and rings? A lot of people like DNZ, also, but I have no experience with them.

That seems like a great scope but is out of my budget. I’d like to spend a few hundred tops. This won’t be my main rifle. I just want something nice and functional if I do decide to use it.

I like the idea of the 2.5-8 but I don’t see any available to purchase with a quick search. I’m also not sure on the mounts. I need to look at it again. I can’t remember if it has a rail already or not. I would like to start all the way over though.

older Model Sevens have 1-hole for a scope base in rear of action. You will need a 1-peice base.... Leupold or a DNZ will work fine

The leupold vx freedom 2-7 would be a great scope for that gun. I have one on a 30-30 and the compact size is perfect for what you are wanting.
For the money they are hard to beat and the difference between it and a vx3 is almost indistinguishable IMO.

I have Md 7 7mm-08 with a Leupold VX3- 4.5-14x 50mm. I also have one with a Leupold VX1 2x7x32 (?). That small objective will leave you wishing you went at least 40mm. I would highly recommend at least a 40. Also, I have the Leupold 1 pc iron mount and rings medium ( yes, medium handles my 50mm).

Not really. I puke at the idea of a 50mm on a small model 7.

Not many things in the hunting equipment world are as terrible as a nice trim compact rifle with a telescope on top.

Leupold 2.5-8x36 is the perfect general purpose hunting riflescope. 2-7x32 is the perfect ultra compact rifle scope. 4.5-14x50 is suitable for near space astronomy work, 6.5 creedmoors, and signaling passing aircraft.

I’ve started to hate the way50mm scopes look, unless it’s on a big heavy dedicated target / long range gun

Check out the Swarovski z3 3-9x36, it is a lightweight and clear scope. I prefer the 4A reticle.

On my lightweight gun I use a Leupold FX-3 in 6x42. I just prefer a fixed power (6x) and it's good out to 250 or so

I gave my son a model 7 .243 with Leupold 2x7 for Christmas when he was 8 in 1986. He was very successful with it for years and his nephews & kids continue to use it.

Fixed power scopes also give great clarity and light transfer, since they have at least one less lens vs variables
