Used the Patagonia Torrentshell for years and loved it before leaving it in some random house on a drunken night.

Replaced it with the Marmot Precip and I would say both are very similar jackets.

Got my Marmot Precip for $53 on Sierra Trading Post, which is one hell of a deal.

Marmot/Mountain Hardwear/Patagonia all make a good 50-100 dollar shell. They're usually 100-150, but you can get last year's version for cheaper.

The precip and torrentshell are both really well-regarded and have a long history of good reviews.

I'm gore tex now (Arcteryx) but that is overkill for most applications.

Look at RIVERS WEST . all price points and all is breathable rain proof. Wore it in Alaska
For days. Better than gore tex. Based in Seattle , rains there everyday.

Also Edwin Watts...if golfers can play golf in it, fishing will be a breeze.

Bass Pro 100mph Gore Tex. One thing about goretex, if it leaks they'll back it up regardless what company used it. Had a pair of Rocky boots leak after about five years sent them to goretex they tested them and then called and told me to pick a pair of similar price from manufacture I wanted so long as it was gore tex lined.

I have a Simms Goretex jacket. I've had it for about 17yrs or so and have yet to tear it up. It's the best quality I've every seen and still waterproof after all these years.
