Navigating Toledo Bend Reservoir...

How dangerous is it. I know they have the channels marked, but must you stay within those areas? Is there an open area where one can safely enjoy boating? Maybe pull a tube?
I have been once but rented a boat. Was contemplating bringing my boat but really do not want to put a treetop through the hull.

I don’t suggest operating at any speed beyond idle outside of the boat lanes. Every person familiar with that area that I’ve ever fished with was pretty adamant about that one rule. And the lanes can be pretty confusing to someone unfamiliar with them IME.

We used to ski and board there, I think you still, can around pirates cove?

It's best to idle everywhere that isn't in a boat lane if you don't absolutely know its clear. It helps a lot to have a map card that has the boat lanes marked. Some are a bit confusing and some have mangled up poles and things like that. You definitely have to stay in them, I found an old pilling about an inch above the water not more than 15 yards away from the channel markers.
As far as tubing goes, there's definitely places you can do it but they aren't marked or anything. We found a good spot the first year.

Mid to south has some open areas. Miller's Bay is open as are large areas near South Toledo State Park.

If you get outside the boat lanes / markers you idle. The La side is better marked than the Tx side I find

The south end if probably your best bet by the dam and as mentioned the South Toledo Bend State Park Area. Do not pull a tube in the boat lanes.

DO NOT PULL A TUBE IN A BOAT LANE. Plenty of open area on south end to ski and tube. Nothing chaps everyone's arse worse than people thinking it's even slighlty acceptable to tube and ski in the dam lanes. 9/10 times it's a center console from south of i-10 or a newby with a pontoon boat they hasn't learned to drive yet.

You'd think this would be fairly common knowledge, but I see it all the time. It's ridiculous.

IF you are going to be on TB for any significant length of time I suggest a GPS with the lanes marked. It can be a life saver, especially on the secondary lanes that only have the single poles. Knowing where the next one is can help you run straighter lines and keep you out of dangerous areas.

Yes, they are not easy to see. Record trails on your GPS unit and then follow the trails after.

We went earlier this year and it was cold as shite and rainy. Markers were extremely hard to see. With the waves and spray I could see where someone could get in trouble pretty quickly if you aren't familiar with the lanes.
Second on the GPS

At one point someone shared a Toledo boat lanes .kmz file on here.
I'm running a search of my computer looking for it now...

I got it.
It's the basic SRA boat lanes. No shortcuts or secrets, but damn helpful. As others have said, some markers are now missing and they can be hard to see if you don't know where to look.

eta: I have a Lowrance .usr file I made for my unit.
I can do a Garmin TRK file as well.
I'll relieve you from your duties, fine sir.
I uploaded it to my Gdrive so anyone with this link can download the files. Feel free to share the link with any and everyone.
