+1 to everything here. I had tons of fun with my airsoft guns during neighborhood wars. The funnest houses were the ones with tree houses since it's like a sniper post.
Chicken, it's a great start to teach your kid the basics of handling a firearm and firearm safety. Of course you regularly break the second rule of firearm safety (never point the muzzle at anything you aren't willing to destroy) but you can still teach him about trigger finger discipline and handling in general.
A few tips:
1. Get the white BBs rather than the yellow ones. They are heavier and fly a bit straighter even though someone mentioned that the BBs will still curve a bit. This is from the "pop-up" system of the gun that puts backspin on the BB. Some guns have it, some don't.
2. Do not remove or paint over the orange tip. As a matter of fact, get a gun that has a lot of visible orange or do a little painting yourself. I remember some of the guns I used as a kid looked extremely realistic with no orange at all and in the modern day would scare some people.
3. As others mentioned too, get eye protection, preferably a full paintball face mask so they don't catch a BB in the nose or ears along with the eyes.
4. Let him have a blast. Some of my favorite memories from my first neighborhood were aisoft wars.

They were the GOAT when I was a kid. Many wars were fought.

Huge fans. They get so excited they hiss and run away from the happiness.

Without a doubt buy yourself one or have multiple in the house if your kid/s have one. The last thing you are going to want is to be shot by your kids with no recourse.
I would take a cardboard box and tape a piece of paper over it as a target. You can shoot through the paper but the ammo stays in the box.

+1 for all the comments
My son used one alot from grade 7 into early HS than he grew out of it. Make sure they wear eye protection, get a few cool safety glasses for him and his buddies. That was rule number 1 w/ me if Ii see no safety glasses the gun goes away.
The other rule is don’t shoot it in the house or the dog etc (maybe the cat ....). I have a man cave in my basement (ya I know there are no basements in LA) and there are lots of “dimples” in the drywall from “errant” shots ...
Its pretty cheap entertainment, they get out side run around and shoot each other – better than call of duty all day and night.
The pellets don’t really hurt, that was one of the things I did was shoot myself w/ it just to see how much damage there could be.

It was always terrifying playing with my uncles bc they weren't scared to get hit. They would rush me and unload and it was so scary

looks awesome...do they sell true biodegradable pellets?
Posted on 2/21/17 at 3:29 pm to Chicken
Not the ones my kid used – I still find them in the yard 5 yrs later. But its a valid point I bet there are biodegradable ones.

I saw some on amazon but some reviews said they didn't degrade at all.

Chicken and anyone else for that matter....
Stress the use of eye protection in the last three years I have had two kids loose an eye to an airsoft "BB". Kids start thinking they can't hurt themselves. Make sure they treat them like a REAL GUN! After seeing so many eye injuries over the years my kids will get .22's instead to use with adult supervision.

Like full blown blindness? Sorry to hear that man. Eye protection is definitely the most important part.

Probably 20 years at least.

Keep in mind not my own kids I'm an eye doctor..
But yes, removal of the eye ultimately after a full penetration of the globe infection and nothing could be done to save it.... it really sucks. Have seen a lot of other airsoft injuries over the years, of course have seen injuries from guns too so not saying all of it is safe but just make sure kids realize it's a toy that can do damage.

As many others have said, eye protection is an absolute must.
Also, my son has an H&K USP airsoft gun that is the exact dimensions and dang near weight of my real USP. It a CO2 operated one. I can speak from experience that it hurts.

That's a damn pellet gun! Your kid knows how to end shite I'll give him that.

That's a pellet gun and not an Airsoft rifle.
