He did have an allergic reaction to the bite, probably due to previous bites by a Trans-Pecos copperhead and a pygmy rattler (for which he had around 12 vials of antivenin).

So, learning from prior mistakes is not in your friends vocabulary?

Looks like the most popular antivenom is about $3,200 p/vial, so he gets dinged with a $40k (just for antivenom) bill once before...and is now facing a $282k (just for antivenom) bill?

I get that this is yall's hobby, but God Damn how many more times does he have to get bitten to say enough is enough?

The juice is not worth the squeeze IMO. Can't he just take pictures of them or something?

I’ve relocated 14 Timber Rattlers (aka Cane Brake Rattlers) from my yard over the years. Makes my wife mad as hell that I don’t kill them, she does if she sees them before me.(killed 1 on our front porch this past summer)
Everyone of them rattled like crazy, only 2 of them actually struck at my snake catching tool.
I’ve always heard the EDB rattlers are pretty aggressive,as far as I know we don’t have them in Grant Parish.

We’ve had a few Copperheads over the years, they do strike like crazy.I don’t mess around with them, kill them quickly.

Ah yes, very casual digging around in tree bark to find another type of snake.

Casual is practicing Leave No Trace and observing nature at a distance. Not screwing around with trees to disturb animals. Classic FAFO

Yea I also raced dirt bikes and after a broke arm, a lacerated esophagus I figured I owed it to myself and family to find a new hobby. Maybe he should consider something different unless he has no one depending on him or cares about his well being!

I was just like you all my life. Had to look for and handle every snake I saw. I was obsessed with them from the time I was about four years old and I still am.

But I have aged and don't have the reflexes and eyesight that I used to have. I typically don't handle venomous snakes anymore. The risk/benefit has changed for me, it probably will for you as well some day.

Pretty sure every sighting in LA has been in Washington, St Tammany, parts of tangipahoa livingston p parishes and the last sighting was near Franklinton in 1995 - a rumored sighting also it 2016 but the 1995 is the one the WLF uses.

Changing habitat and land use practices greatly diminished their suitable habitat here(as well as in much of the rest of the gulf south.

Meh…my kids are all grown and doing well on their own, and I have a million dollars in life insurance so I’m worth more dead than alive to my wife. Maybe that’s why she’s always saying, “You should go catch some rattlesnakes this weekend.”

This is definitely a valid point. I wear high boots everywhere now (and almost stepped on a nice sized Western Diamondback in West Texas back in September - didn’t know it was there til it rattled and took off at my feet). I can assure you he’ll be wearing boots from now on.

I respect your skill with snakes, and I hope this never happens, but I suspect there is no way the insurance company is going to pay that out if you die handling snakes.

So from what you’ve written, 100 viles of anti-venom, 12+ days in MICU, and unknown number of days in recovery. Oh, and a helicopter ride.
That’s dedication! ….or something else. He must have great insurance or is wealthy.

It seems that snake likely injected his full load of venom which means he was extremely agitated or startled.

It is purely dedication and love of animals, particularly snakes - though anything is fair game. One of his coolest catches this year was a badger that he caught by hand and handled. He does make a living off of social media, but basically just enough to pay the bills and continue what he loves doing. He’s certainly not getting rich from it. He and his wife are literally the nicest and most devout people I’ve ever met and are true nature enthusiasts who love God and all of his creations.

And for sure that snake unloaded on him with everything it had. It was about as bad of a bite as you can get. Went numb from head to toe within a couple minutes. Could barely speak or keep his eyes open. Lost control of bodily functions on the helicopter. All exacerbated by an allergic reaction as well.
