Yikes, not trying to spend quite that much on a play around gun.

There's an abundance of custom barrels for the 10/22, and yes, some of them are very expensive. That's one of the nice things about the 10/22: when you start upgrading it you can spend as much (or as little) as you want to.

Cost wise, the Feddersen barrel I bought was a mid-range barrel.. My barrel is the standard factory contour since my 10/22 is a squirrel hunting gun, not a bench gun. IIRC, most custom barrels are 16-16" long.

truer words cannot be said.

I have 2 10/22's that I stripped down and rebuild with all new parts and 1 that I bought as a custom gun. I have from $700 to $1000 in each 10/22. Also, have a 10/22 takedown that I just use for plinking. All is did was put a red dot on that one.

Assuming you are referencing this.

quote:

For reference, all the prices for the above parts are from Midwayusa: Volquartsen automatic bolt release $9, recoil buffer $11, extended mag release $19 and target hammer $33.

I've gone the drop in parts replacement route and these made the trigger 100% better on my 10/22. Then I sent my trigger in for the Tier 3 Brimestone trigger job I posted eariler it is 1000% better than the original trigger. Volquartsen target hammer makes the trigger pull lighter but there is creep in the system that you can't get rid of without a proper trigger job. Brimston job is not too much more than all the parts listed $38.50 + shipping v. $30 just for the target hammer. They also do the auto bolt release mod as part of the trigger job (though I did mine myself already with a set of small micro files).

If you do go the Volquartsen target hammer route I will suggest that you do not use the springs that come with the kit. Trigger reset problems will pop up when the trigger group is not perfectly 100% clean with the springs in the kit and I found they didn't have much impact in the feel of the trigger pull. As a comparison IIRC stock trigger pull was ~7lbs. Volquartsen with stock springs 3.5lbs. I have the "Sweet Spot" option from Brimstone and it pulls 2.2lbs but more noticeably the break is crisp with no creep.

The stock chamber is pretty loose so if you find a sporter taper barrel with a Bentz chamber it really helps the accuracy. Green Mountain makes a nice one.

The Magpul stock is also a great customizable option for the 10/22. I like how you can fine tune the length of pull and raise the comb for a better cheek weld with optics. Another big plus is that the barrel channel reverses so you can use it with a sporter taper or bull profiled barrels.

I tried a couple of extended mag released and my favorite was the PWS T3. That being said I went the other direction with my hunting rifle and went with a flush magazine release after losing a magazine to an inadvertent release with a lever style release. With the PWS you don't have to break position you can just nudge the level with your trigger finger just like activating the safety.

Two more parts I found very helpful. EGW extended picatinny rail. If you just shoot sitting or standing it might not be an issue but if you shoot prone you can't get the scope far enough forward for a good sight picture with the standard rail.

Kidd charging handle guide rod. Amazing how much smoother the charging handle operation is after this cheap $10 upgrade.

They do good work, but it's not inexpensive. I had them do a trigger job on a Ruger 77/22 prob >25 years ago. I was pleased w/ it. Seems like they took it down to 2.5# or so. I asked them about doing a trigger job on my 10/22, but seems like they said they wouldn't take it down to <3#.

DDX,
Thanks for the info. Sounds like Brimstone has some neat offerings I need to look into.

Yeah, the replacement extended mag releases can lend themselves to lost magazines. I carry my 10/22 w/ my hand covering the lever mag release to avoid that problem.

So thanks for the info on Brimstone, sending my trigger tomorrow. Having a little bit of a time trying to choose my barrel.

The three I am looking at are a GreenMountain 20" fluted sporter. I would prefer a 18" but they dont seem to make one however I like that it is fluted which makes it just about the same weight as the 18" barrels I am looking at. My other concern is it says not to use subsonic or stinger ammo with it.

The next is a Feddersen 18" Contoured, .920-.635, a plus is I can have it threaded for a few bucks more.

The is a ER Shaw 18" factory contour, however I havent found much info on these so I am leaning towards the other two.

Is there any positives or negatives between the 18" and 20"? Other than handiness of the 18, we are talking 22lr here so I am sure ballistics wise it is nil.

I have decided on the Hogue OverMolded for the stock assuming whatever barrel I go with will work for it.

So the trigger job will negate the need for the target hammer and the auto bolt release, do you still recommend the recoil buffer?

The recoil buffer takes away the metallic contact from the bolt and the stock steel buffer. I do this on all of mine because it makes it more pleasant to shoot. I have two that are just simple nylon 1/4" bolts cut to length. I have a nicer one I got off a member of rimfirecentral that is a steel rod covered in rubber. Both work fine. The nylon bolt is dirt cheap.

Mine has the Magpul Hunter X-22 stock, a threaded Green Mountain bull barrel (suppressor on the way), and a Leupold VX-1 scope.

I did some amateur gunsmithing on the bolt release.

Decent scope,sling,ammo.

Bought a Ruger 10/.22 the other day,put a Nikon pro-Staff rimfire scope on it.
Haven't gotten to shoot it yet. Probably this weekend.

I bought a Savage A-22magnum at the same time, and put the same scope on it. I shot 10 rounds through that 1,at the little range behind the gun shop.

I was just shooting at 25 yards (resting on a stack of 2x10 saw drop, not ideal),but it was just 1 big jagged hole on the target.
Pretty damn impressed. I guess,it's possible to make it a better rifle, but hell, I don't think could shoot well enough to tell.

If the Ruger shoots anywhere close to that well, I will be happy.

I don't know what those rifles are going for anywhere else, but I just bought the standard black 1,it came with a Weaver scope on it and a plastic case with the Ruger Logo on it.
I gave 300 bucks plus tax, that seemed like a decent deal to me,then bought the Nikon scope, and let them swap it out and bore sight it.

Maybe That Weaver scope is decent enough?
I've never owned a Weaver scope,so I don't know about them.
Is it worth putting on another .22 rifle that I have?

IIRC, current Weaver scopes (like nearly all other optics) is made in China. While it's not the brand it used to be, it's prob fine for a plinking 22 lr. Since you've already got, try it out and see. Let us know what you find out if you shoot it.

If your going with the .920 barrel, just know that it’s going to be heavy. Very.

That was the main reason I switched to the Tactical Solutions.
