Just picked up a stainless 10/22 from the academy sale (thanks OB). Now I'm looking to customize it with some accessories.
I'm already looking at the BX trigger.

Let me hear your must haves!

TIA.

Forget the BX. Send your trigger to Brimstone.

Mine has a Tactical Solutions barrel, Hogue overmold stock and a bx trigger. It’s a tack driver

Agreed. OTOH, if you're half way handy w/ tools and have 30 min or so (less if you have a Dremel), you can make the modifications on the factory part yourself. Should be able to find on Google or Youtube.

The 10/22 is a wonderful gun as is. Having said that, there's also an entire industry built around accessorizing it. You need to address a few questions: Are you trying to improve it's accuracy/function or are you trying to change it's looks? How much are you willing to spend?

I've got four 10/22's all of which have been lightly accessorized. If your goal is to improve the function/accuracy of your gun, here's what I'd do:

1.The first thing I'd do is to it w/ and w/o the barrel band. All my 10/22's that have barrel bands shoot more accurately w/o them.
2. I do the following to all my 10/22's: alter the bolt release (so it functions like other guns w/ an automatic bolt release); replace the recoil buffer (to reduce the banging the action undergoes while cycling); replace the mag release "button" w/ a lever that protrudes from the bottom of the action (to me, the lever works easier than the button); replace the hammer w/ a target hammer (on my gun, this alone decreases trigger pull significantly from avg of 6-7# to 3.5-4#'s). I'd try that before spending a lot of money on a custom trigger.

For reference, all the prices for the above parts are from Midwayusa:
Volquartsen automatic bolt release $9, recoil buffer $11, extended mag release $19 and target hammer $33.

I've been pleased w/ the accuracy of all my 10/22's with the stock barrel. Shoot the gun some and decide if shoots well enough or not. I don't have a custom barrel or stock on any of mine. If you mainly want to change the looks, the sky's the limit w/ a plethora of aftermarket stocks. It's all just a matter of how you want it to look.

Since I wanted a threaded barrel, I ended up replacing the stock barrel on one of my 10/22's with a custom barrel from Feddersen. Their barrels are well respected and don't cost nearly as much as other custom barrels.

Start shooting (and enjoying) that 10/22!

Visit www.rimfirecentral.com to get more info about 22's than you ever thought existed.

Tiger on the Hill - I'm not educated on the 10/22 at your level. Q: is the "TakeDown" model just as productive on accuracy, long term performance than the standard?
Thx

So you recommend taking the barrel band off? I may be wrong but I want to say it is the main thing securing the barrel and the action to the stock. I think there's only one other screw that holds the action to the stock. As for the other upgrade you listed are any special tools needed?

Also do you have any stock recommendations? The one it comes with leaves a lot to be desired, looking for something light, looking to turn it into a squirrel gun.

Yes. Remove the barrel band. It’s not needed.

For an inexpensive but really good stock look the the hogue overmold.

Bbvdd's right; the barrel band isn't necessary. I also bought a Hogue overmolded stock when I recently upgraded my 35 year old 10/22. I also like the long, lever type mag release shown in this pic.

Appropriate sized scredrivers (if you don't already have a nice set of gun screwdrivers (now'd be a good time to get one. I like the one from Brownell's, but Wheelers's is a good bit less expensive and looks pretty good) and some punches; a Dremel tool really helps if you decide to modify the bolt release yourself, but it could be done w/ files; i find hemostats useful for most gunsmithing work, as well. It's prolly just my aging eyes, but I find myself using a pair of inexpensive magnifying eye loupes more and more.

Yea I am going to go with the Tan stock just like that one. Going to combine that with the upgrades he listed and add a longer barrel of I can find one that is not a bull barrel.

Look at the Tactical Solutions barrels.

It’s a stainless tube wrapped in aluminum. Crazy accurate and very light. Stupid light actually.

TT, thanks for the kind words, but I'm really not all that educated; I played around on the actions of all my 10/22's one winter and learned a lot about it. The work's really not that hard. As far as the takedown model goes, although I don't have one I have a hard time believing that across the board it'd be as accurate as the regular 10/22. It seems like there'd be problems w/ repeatable accuracy since removing and replacing the barrel would cause inconsistencies w/ the barrel lock up and the alignment of the scope that's mounted on the action and the barrel.

Here's an interesting thread from Rimfire Central on this topic.

Yikes, not trying to spend quite that much on a play around gun.
