MS crappie limits lowered due to scopin

Surprised this hasn't been posted yet. Right up this board's alley.

"We did a 3-year study on Sardis, Enid and Grenada looking at if they were catching fish with a single pole or trolling," said Keith Meals, regional fisheries biologist for the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks. "We also looked at if they were using live sonar.
"In that 3-year period we saw our fishermen using live sonar increase from 20% to 70% and it's probably higher than that, now."

technology is having a negative impact on the North Mississippi lakes. So, the commission opted to reduce the limit on the lakes from 15 crappie to 10 crappie over 12 inches in length per angler per day and no more than 25 crappie per boat per day.
"We're trying to maintain a quality fishery in terms of size," Meals said.

Green jeans has been asking me sonar questions just about every time I fish Barnett for the last few years. They come and interview you as you’re trailering your boat.
Last time I talked to them, they said they weren’t really seeing live scope alter bass fishing numbers significantly. It was definitely crappie fishing that was taking the hit. Surprised the limit change didn’t go across the entire state.

An old man showed me how he caught sacalait . His first one he would hook a bobber in it and follow it and fish the area until he had his limit... he probably took more than his limit...

Old Baw on our lake in NE louisiana goes out and keeps 30 a day with livescope. Baw doesnt miss a day and donates the fish to his church. Its a problem.

For who? If I were to buy a live scope you better believe I'm catching my money's worth.

When I crappie fish using LiveScope, I keep ten and release the rest. I usually don't fish longer than enough time to catch ten. LiveScope has made crappie fishing easier.

Without livescope, were people already limiting regularly? Or are significantly more people limiting now with livescope? If it's the latter, I can understand the rule change because harvests have gone up significantly. If it's the former, it's flawed logic.

I could find crappie pretty easy with just Down Imaging. Relative to catching crappie, if you don't see them on DI, you likely won't see them much on LS. I do come upon some brush piles that aren't holding many fish. But with LS, you can cull through the brush piles pretty quickly.

Thats an interesting logic. Oddly enough scoping has affecting me keeping more fish even though I don't own one. When I'm out doing my usual panfishing on the lake with all the other fishermen looking at their screens I suddenly feel like my releasing the 1.5lb bass is kinda silly. Used to release all the bass but now I keep as many as I need to make a meal. If the other guys aren't going to fish fair neither am I.

Not saying I told ya so but I kinda did.
Just like Iowa is doing away with cell cams.
I hate more govt rules but who’s gonna protect the wildlife? Not everyone is gonna self restrict themself.

Put the shiners (if you’re using em)in a big mason jug/bottle with holes in the lid with a string on it. When the bite slows up drop em down, you see the hits from the string jumping.
Put the hook back in the water and profit.

Without Livescope
Guides that set out their own brush piles and knew how to fish them could catch limits most days, now, every weekend warrior is able to fish the guides’ brush piles and catch fish, whereas before, most couldn’t sniff a box of fish. I suspect this isn’t the last of the ‘scope driven limit reductions, including big places like Toledo Bend and Sam Rayburn.

Five baws buy LiveScopes. They love to fish. Just how many fillets can they pack and freeze in a year of fishing? Why would they do this? Yeah, limits need to be reduced.

That ought to put a damper on the pressure. Catching 10 over 12 will only take about an hour when they are eating. Don't know how many folks will pay $400 for 50 crappie filets....
