what percentage of the total opportunity cost is the $500 for the license?
You make good points. Im just saying im tired of the nickel and diming of rightful landowners. I hope to own sw ms property in 10 yrs. My family had it 1980-2016 and dealt with theft, encroachment by neighbors, etc. The last thing I want is the state penalizing me with $525 licensing per hunter when I own the soil

My parents own property in SW Miss where they live. I’ve been hunting there for 30 years. Here’s the fricked up part, one day when I own the property, I WILL STILL HAVE TO PURCHASE NON RESIDENT
So glad I purchased a lifetime non resident license when they were still available.

No one is forcing you to buy land in Mississippi. The non resident liscense is a cost you know about before you purchase. I deal with the same thing in Louisiana as a non resident.
Non residents are getting it stuck to them all across the country. Basically, non residents keep state game departments afloat. At the same time, non residents are seeing less and less opportunities across the country.
Also, as a landowner, the $500 liscense will be small potatoes compared to all of the other costs you will incur. Owning land takes a whole lot of money, even after you’ve purchased it.

Not only should a landowner be exempt but ALL landowners should be exempt of ANY hunting license. Resident or not
The people own the game
Sounds like you want to live and buy land in England instead of the US of A

I'm the one who has the place just south of y'all and used to hunt the bordering property to yours. Since I've been 18 I have had a Mississippi address and drivers license. I hardly ever hunted La when I still lived there and would just buy a non resident La fishing license. It was way cheaper of an option

Was $100 last year. Thats for the velvet season I believe.
Been hunting MS for 15 years. Besides St Francisville area there’s no place I can drive 2 hours and not be hunting in chest deep water. I rather pay than deal with skeeters and swamp!

I have property in MS. I don't mind paying the 500 for NR. What sucks is family and friends don't want to pay the crazy fees for a weekend or two.

Iron banks, that’s where non resident fees get to be anti hunting. At times, high non resident fees are keeping friends and families from hunting together.

Besides my wife and kids I’m a solo hunter so that hasn’t affected me.
Wife and kids hunt private and I hunt public. Public surrounds our place so I hunt it verses putting pressure on our private.

Unfortunately for you north LA baws, your dl does not denote south LA or north LA. It leaves us no choice but to lump all of you together as slob hunters.

Mississippi Hunting + Deer + Primitive + Turkey is my cheapest out of state license this season...
Mississippi allows 3 bucks 5 does 3 turkey; 4 months of deer season, 1.5 months of turkey
Illinois is more expensive and you get 1 buck, 1 doe (can buy more doe tags at $25/)
Utah elk was close to $800 1 either sex elk, archery only, 1 month

Yes, most HAVE to pay (and pay) for a non-resident license. What you do NOT have to do is buy ANYTHING else in the great state of Mississippi! Unless it is an absolute necessity, the only thing that works is the power of the dollar. Mississippi wants dollars, great that is their right, but give the least allowed by law. It’s the little things done by many that can implement change, and even if no change happens, do what you can do.

Huh? Property taxes on raw land is not that much, with TX being the exception.

Anyone who was born in MS (native son) is eligible to buy a specilal lifetime license. I bought one about 30 years ago for $1000 and have been able to hunt and fish all these years. I have no idea what the cost would be today. Those eligible should investgate. This license covers all game that are legal to hunt.

Tractor, implements, seed, fertilizer, deer stands, gates, camp house
Posted on 11/20/24 at 10:03 am to 257WBY
Absolutely none of that is necessary to own land.

How do you justify the price increase to the velvet season, that has its own fee? I am guessing the increase has more to with CWD in the state than the velvet season. I have hunted Ms. on family land for the last 16 years, and over that time the license has increased well before the velvet season was proposed.

This is why it is hard to not renew our lease. 2h and 15 min drive up 55 from Houma. Half day on Friday at work and I'm in a tree before 3/3:30. Or wake up early Saturday morning and hunt all day.

The velvet season doesn’t have its own fee, it’s not optional. The permit increased to $100 when the velvet season was announced, to pay for the mandatory CWD testing of any buck harvested in it. Residents aren’t subject to the $100 permit. The state is financing the cost of their CWD testing program via fees to non-residents, whether or not they actually participate in the velvet season, when resident deer breeders or MS residents who traveled to CWD areas and returned home with a contaminated carcass caused the issue in the first place. In summary, it’s absolute horse shite.

Not only that but if both parents were born in MS but a child was born out of state, they can buy a lifetime license as a native son.
I was born in TN and my wife in MS, so my son wasn't eligible. I tried.
