It's scary. My nephew broke down on the red river a few years ago in a lighting storm. Was lost for about three hours until he swam to shore.

Ill never forget it. Prayers to the family hope they find him.

That stinks. As a guy that kayaks alone a lot, I never really think that this could happen to me. I guess there is always a chance, but it seems like you have to either have terrible luck,or be doing something dumb to go missing like this. Hope they find the second guy alive.

For a $150 yearly Spot tracker subscription, you can remove the possibility. I use mine in tracking mode anytime I'm on the water. Even if you can't push help button, it updates location to a web site every 10 minutes. If you push help it texts and emails your coordinates to your list of people saying you need help. It can also be used to tell people you are OK.

You can also use it to see/ save your route and it will tag pictures you upload to the location they were taken site.

My wife saw me being swept out of the Mississippi river into a flood plain called Paw Paws chute when i flipped in bad conditions during a race a few years ago. Phone was ruined despite being in Dry Bag. Spot tracker was under water for 10 minutes and as soon as I flipped kayak back over it resumed plotting my location.

According to the DMR, the two men were last seen by a tugboat around 4 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. Marine Patrol received a call at 7:11 p.m. Wednesday night from the Biloxi Police Department that a shrimp vessel had found two empty kayaks adrift in the Davis Bayou area in Ocean Springs.

hate to say it, but i wonder if the tugboat flipped one of them over

Wow, just read the linked article....

My two boys (11 & 13) and I are all headed to Ocean Springs tomorrow. We are all participating in the Battle on the Bayou kayak race there this weekend. 185 boats registered so far I will check to see if they were signed up.

Anyone have any theories on what could have caused this?

These guys names are not on the list of racers. 214 paddlers in the race so I'm sure some people know them and it's held in Ocean Springs.

For those that don't know how the spot tracker looks. This is my race in Ocean Springs last year. Its google maps so you can zoom in to see every bit of detail when tracking. Sat it on my mailbox and zoomed all the way down to see plot on mailbox

I've looked into this and read pretty bad reviews. You haven't had any problems?

The first generation units had some issues. I have never had any issue (knocks on wood) with my Spott 2. I have 12-15 friends that have them and don't know of
anyone that had issues.

The Spot 2 are the smaller versions. A friend that is a paramedic in Colorado says it no longer search and rescue with a Spot; it's just a rescue.

They are headquartered in Mandeville.

When I was in college I took this 17 year old girl canoeing at my farm. We stopped for lunch and sexy time and were running way behind. Her dad flipped out and called the cops.

Kayaking in the Red River not a very smart thing to do as a sport. Might as well be in the Mississippi !

Not even close. In fact the reason I don't fish the Red much is cause there's seldom ANY current. People often ski in the Red.
