I wasn't trespassing. I have permission for both sides of the levees.

Why was it such a bigger deal in 2011? It could be because we just went through this four years ago so this isn't new after going three decades without opening Morganza in 2011. But I think it also has something do to with the weird time of the year it is. People don't expect to have to talk about the river in January.
It was a non stop story in 2011. It's kind of back page this time. We even had a flood board.

This is a long thread & don't want to rehash it. I don't feel like arguing with everybody again. It is a big deal. BC & M spillway opening this early has never happened. I live 2 miles from the river & have a hydraulic display in my back yard. The river rising this quick slams the levees.

I didn't say it's not a big deal. I mean why isn't it a bigger deal to the media like it was in 2011?
I think it's clear it's because we just went through this in 2011 when we hadn't for 38 years. Now it's just been 4. They can't drum up as much discussion. Also the strange time of the year is affecting the coverage.

We'd better hope for not much snow this year up north. The river shouldn't be high at all right now

The public officials control the narrative. & didn't mean you.
Hickory it could get real nasty this spring. Most say it's not going to get cold this winter, so no melt. Every front pulls moister out of the gulf. With the gulf being warm, that means more snow (moister) up north. Sure was cold for that Vikings today.
I'm not saying we will have a failure this year. No one can talk in absolutes. Can't say that it won't either.
I can say everyday this current rise is looking better right now.

Was at my daughters yesterday. The Mississippi River/levee is her backyard. Strange seeing the water level higher then there roof top now.
Voorhies, I'm sure you know my daughter and her SO. There house is at the foot of the ramp going up into the spillway, Morganza side.

Updates, and I hope to get a Jan 11 some time later.
Jan 9:
Jan 10:
Jan 9:
quote:
-The river is expected to crest at Arkansas City on Tuesday, Jan 12 and at Greenville on Wednesday, Jan 13 at stages roughly 7-8 ft lower than the 2011 flood peak gauge readings. I have spoken with engineers from the Mississippi Levee Board and the Yazoo-Mississippi Levee Board and they do not anticipate major problems in conveying the flood on the main stem, though they indicate a need for vigilance
quote:
-Our friends along the Fifth LA Levee District expect to see crests on the Vicksburg and Natchez gauges next weekend. Reynold Minsky flew his levees earlier this week and was impressed by the conditions they are in. He anticipates no problems during this current flood fight and extended the invitation for MG Wehr to visit the levees.
quote:
-Down in the lower Atchafalaya Basin, flood fighters in Morgan City are busily prepping for a potential major flood fight. Current projections indicate a crest of 8.5 ft on the Morgan City gauge without operation of the Morganza Spillway. This is the threshold height for major flood fighting operations in Morgan City and the sinking of the barge at Bayou Chene by the St. Mary Levee District. Barge sinking operations could commence on Jan 12 or Jan 13, depending on the outcome of the potential Morganza floodway operation. As part of the backwater flooding protection in Bayou Chene, the LA National Guard has already begun installing HESCO baskets on Avoca Island.
quote:
-No decision has been made regarding the potential opening of the Morganza Spillway operation because forecasted discharges and stages are hovering around the trigger points for activation though absent a rising hydrograph.
If activation were to become necessary, it still looks as though Jan 13 would be the earliest date under current forecasted conditions. A freeboard assessment of the Mississippi River levees along the Baton Rouge to New Orleans corridor that takes into account the current forecast without Morganza operation is positive.
quote:
- On Monday, the tail water should be sufficient to open the overbank structure at the Old River Control Complex in a staggered panel configuration, marking the first time since 1984 that the overbank structure has been opened to full capacity of 100k cfs.
-The Bonnet Carré spillway will open tomorrow following a news conference on the structure at 10:00 am
Jan 10:
quote:
Today we operated the Bonnet Carré Spillway to relieve pressure on the levee system protecting the greater New Orleans. (See attached photo) The New Orleans District opened approximately 20 gate bays today and will open
an additional 10 bays tomorrow. Earlier today it was estimated that roughly 250 bays would be opened during this event to divert approximately 245k cfs from the Mississippi River.
quote:
The NWS again lowered forecasted crests on the Arkansas City to Red River Landing reach. Since last Sunday, the NWS has lowered the projected crest at Arkansas City by three feet to 44.2; at Greenville by three feet to 56.2; at Vicksburg by 4.5 feet to 50.5; at Natchez by three feet to 57 feet; and at Red River Landing by 1.5 feet to 61 feet.
-With each passing day and each lower forecast projection, the operation of the Morganza Spillway becomes less likely during the current flood crest. As of 1500 today, MG Wehr made no decision regarding the floodway.
quote:
In the Atchafalaya Basin, the NWS lowered the projected crest at Morgan City to 8.0 feet without operation of the Morganza Spillway. The St. Mary Levee District is driving sheet piles at Bayou Chene in preparation of the barge sinking operation that will be made necessary by the activation of the Morganza Spillway if the order to open the gates is given.

I read yesterday that some guy was running his boat through open bayou landing parking lot. Gonna be a while before I fish there again.
Oh, and the DW is doing a flyover tomorrow of "red river, black lake, 3 locks & dam, Atchafalaya, and morganza". Maybe she will take some video.

I'll add that there was significantly more water on the East side of the basin this morning (at least under I10) as opposed to my commute Friday. I was surprised how much the tide is up between Ramah and the Whiskey Bay exit.
