How would someone go about getting close enough to see them open the Morganza? Do they block off the roads while opening it? Probably a stupid question, but then again its not like they open it often.
2011 they would not let anyone stop along hwy 1, unlike 1973.

The Corp has triggers in place. They can't legally say confirmed until it hits 57ft which ='s 1.5.
They are following their procedures. If the river was rising at twice the pace as it is now, then we would only get a 36 hour official notice before they open the 1st gate.
They open the gates over the period of days to minimize environmental damage & erosion
When the government doesnt follow their written procedures to the T, they get sued.
The gates are opening get your shite out. Lawyers is why they can't officially say confirmed.

I would assume they are going to open the Bonnet Carre as well as that is the primary Spillway and it's opened more often.
Time to revive the Flood Board.

I just got off the phone with Pointe Coupee electric and they said they won't make a decision to shut off any power until Monday.

I called them earlier too. They said if they don't check your meter by boat, then you are probably good but to check back early next week.

Another bout of rain headed for the upper Mississippi Valley this weekend. Not heavy but another 1-2 inches.

We have some old family pictures of my great grandparents house in Bayou Chene during the 1927 flood. About 4 or 5 feet of the peak of the roof is all that is sticking out the water. After that flood is when they moved to "town", St. Martinville. Bayou Chene back then was a small town, had some stores, a church, and a bunch of houses, only way to get there was by boat.
we also have pics of my grandparents house and neighborhood in Morgan City during the 1927 flood.
I'm going to see what aunt or uncle has the pics and see if I can get them and I will post them.

That's the event that drove my Dad's family out of St. Landry. He was the only one to return and that was after the war.

I don't see why they are even going thru the trouble of opening the spillway at Morganza. Seems like a lot of work for a flood that wont even be on the same level as 2011. I mean it is already dropping a 1' a day up north, this thing isn't going to last a week

my understanding is that they want to relieve/reduce pressure on levees and they want a safety net.

I remember back in the late 80s / early 90s some of the gates had to opened for some reason (maybe right around the time Hurricane Andrew hit). Anyway, water backed up to where we could catch 2-3 pound spotted bass off the side of the road with casting nets. Anyone else remember that?

They are already saying this flood will be up there with 29 and 11 floods in Mississippi. I barely got out this weekend when levee or something failed and water went from nothing to 3 feet in 45 minutes
