And I said lots of rifles will do it but only in the hands of a very capable shooter. Also your talking 400 plus inches of drop vs 260 plus in the 300 mags. Which do you think is easier to calculate and hold on target at that range not including dealing with the wind. 30-06 will do it but takes much more skill to get it done

If I were building a 1000 yd rifle "fun gun" for punching paper or ringing steel (not hunting), I'd go with a 6 Dasher or 6.5x47Lapua. Accuracy has already been proven with a 1.4" 5-shot group at 1K. If you build it right and do your part you can consistently ring steel at long range. Build a 12 - 14 lb rifle sporting a 28" - 30" barrel.
If the goal is hunting or shooting deer/elk size game, then I'd consider the .284 or one of the wildcat 30's . These would be guns mainly shot from the bench and definitely not walk-around field rifles. You could build bare rifle with a Rem 700 action for $1200 + depending on options and upgrades.
Glass would likely start at $1000 minimum .

APR is making some nice rifles for $1400 to $1800.

I'm guessing you didn't lookup what I asked.
Math is way off. My 260 only has 280 inches of drop at 1000. 130 berger at 2850.
215 berger at 2700 has about the same drop out of a 30-06.
Will a 300 mag do it better....sure
A 338 lapua will do it even better and we can go on and on.

I bet my friend went through 10 guns--all customs--and settled on 30.06 for some reason.
He rarely shoots at a deer less than 800 yards and I think his longest is 11 or 1200.
He is into it. He has good glass and a Swarovski spotting scope and shoots off the top of his pickup truck. He told me he pulls into the field with a thermos of coffee and a book. Every 15 or 20 minutes he scans the other side of the field with some good binoculars and if he sees a deer he gets out of truck and gets in the bed with all his toys and sets up to shoot off the roof. I ask him if all that motion and noise every spooks the deer and he said if they can hear that they are too close for him to shoot at em.

I guess we were arguing the same point. Hell I don't even remember what my point was I guess I was just saying there are better calibers out there to shoot at 1000 yards than a 30-06. I love my 30-06 and is it capable absolutely.

I wonder what impact recoil has at that range? Even a 16th of inch movement on the barrel would be huge at 1000 yards.

The only person to shoot a 30-06 at close to those ranges was Carlos Hathcock and he is probably the greatest sniper to ever live.
As a Marine sniper in Viet Nam, Hathcock shot a 308 Win.

I'd for for a 284, but with having to make brass it gets left out.
Just buy Lapua 6.5x284 Win brass, neck it up to 7mm, load it and shoot. Necking it up shouldn't take more that an extra 30 sec/brass and will only need to be done once.

Very sorry to say Mr. As a former marine sniper in Vietnam but Carlos shot a model 70 Winchester in 30-06

You are correct, but, no need to be an ahole,,,, yet.

OP I looked into doing about the same thing you are for a while. If it were me I would buy a used Savage 110 for about 300.00 then have it rebarreled in whatever caliber you want. There are several barrel companies that offer drop in barrels for a Savage for 300.00 give or take. Just make sure the donor gun has the same bolt face as what you intend to build as they are sometimes hard to find. Then I would get a good stock and have it bedded.
If you are budget concious then look at brass prices and availability while choosing. I had a 6.5x284 and it's a great round but brass is sometime hard to come by. If I wanted to just ring steel I'd look at a .260 or a Creedmore and shoot whichever 140 grain bullet it likes. A good choice in optics I haven't seen mentioned here is the Weaver Tactical 4x20x50. LINK Go over to Here and do some reading, wealth of knowledge there.

Internet sources seem to be split as to whether he primarily shot a 30-06 or a 308. It's been a long time since I read his book so I may be wrong. If I am, so be it. I'll check his book later tonight since now you've got me curious, as well.

I stand corrected. As best i can tell, it looks as if Mr. Hathcock did indeed use a Winchester M70 in 30-06 (7.62X63) for at least most, and possibly all (excluding the few shots he took w/ a modified 50 cal machine gun) of his work in Viet Nam. Sadly, I couldn't find my copy of his book, but I found 2 other resources. On 2 of his missions in 1967 mentioned in one of the books, he used a Winchester M70 in 30-06 shooting FMJ match grade ammo. One mission was the one used for the movie "Sniper." The Win M70 in 30-06 w/ an 8X Unertl scope was the Marine's sniper weapon during early parts of the Viet Nam war. The Remington M700 in 308 Win (7.62X51) w/ a 3-9X Redfield scope became the basic Marine sniper weapon in 1966, but was not deployed much until 1967. Being who he was, I bet Hathcock was able to use whatever weapon he wished to in 1967.

I have a solid semi-custom Rem 700 chambered in .30-06 collecting dust in my safe if you're interested. It started out as a factory SS synthetic stock rifle and evolved over the years. I had all metal coated in matte black KG Gun Kote, replaced the factory stock with a Bell & Carlson Medalist and eventually sent it to Hill Country Rifles for their Accurizing package.
I always wanted a full custom rifle and had Hill Country build me a .308 when my bank account was fat after contracting abroad.
Let me know if you're interested.
Cheers

1500 dollar plus scope on a hand built rifle?
The baws on here shoot deer all the time at 800 yars with their Tika T3s and Nikon Prostaf scopes.

It groups just under an inch. The .308 HCR built for me is a sub .5 MOA shooter. Definitely worth the $$$$ I paid for it
