$1200 will get you a Remington 700 Sendero in 300 RUM. Definitely a 1000 yard rifle but you may want to spend a little more on optics if your shooting that far.

NO Remington. Savage is a better deal.

I wouldn't do a 300 rum either. Might as well but another barrel blank and get ready.

Agreed. That caliber is a huge hit to the wallet and shoulder. To 1000 yards, 6.5 calibers are perfect. .308 works too.

I have a friend that only shoots long range. He has killed deer at 900 and 1000 yards on several occasions over large Mississippi bean fields. He has plenty of money and has had guns built for him in all kinds of calibers.

Once he got through experimenting he settled on a bolt action 30.06 and that is what he shoots today.

Ya, I have my 270 in the safe that I got when I was 10. One day it'll get rebarreled to 30-06 and be a shooter.

30-06 is a great round when reloaded for, if you Google montanamarine and 3006, he did a ton of experimenting and his results were pretty awesome.

You aren't gonna find glass to get you reliably to 1000 yards for less than around $1500

Vortex viper
Leupold Mark 4

Both will do that with ease

If my memory serves me right, I think for a while Leupold didn't have matched turrets and reticles. That would be a pain to do the math. To OP, one thing I forgot was that the Bushnell tactical scopes (ERS and XRS) are great for the money.

I think I'd get a .30-06 or .300 win mag if I was building a long range rife.

30-06 is a great round and my everyday shooter but not a consistent 1000 yard rifle by no means. He is asking about a 1000 yard shooter and the 300 RUM gets it done all day. As for being hard on the wallet and shoulder I call BS. If your going to be a long range shooter you will have to be into reloading as well and yes it will cost a little extra on powder but it out shoots the 30-06 at those ranges in its sleep. The Sendero rifle has a 26'' heavy barrel which lessons the recoil considerably. I find it pushes much more than it does kick like hell than say a 7 mag. The only person to shoot a 30-06 at close to those ranges was Carlos Hathcock and he is probably the greatest sniper to ever live. The 6mm rounds are great and have awesome ballistic coefficients but can't push the grains or velocities your 300 plus rifles do intern allowing the wind to play hell with a bullet down range.

No need for RUM. .300WinMag will do 1k yards easy all day if he even wanted to shoot a 7.62 gun.

I agree the 300 win mag will do it all day as well but to make consitant shots at that range takes skill. There are lots of calibers and rifles out there that can do it but they have to be in the hands of a very capable shooter.

30-06 will do 1000 with ease. Especially if reloading.

And you don't have to deal with a belted case for reloading.

I'm serious, Google montana marine and 30-06, proof is out there.

I'd for for a 284, but with having to make brass it gets left out.
