May 2-3 Weekend Report

In less than a 12hr span between Saturday evening and Sunday morning I managed to help decrease the nuisance hog and pond perch populations around the Poplarville, MS area!

nice job...the happy kids say it all... 
went down to Chef Pass/Bayou Savage yesterday to scout it out and caught some small bass and a nice flounder...
today steaks - asparagus bunches wrapped in bacon - brussel sprouts - a mushroom n onion sauce to put on the steaks...
couple of beers...
blessed...

Fished Shell Beach today with two buddies and managed a 3 man limit of reds and 26 trout. I know the launches are crazy right now, but it’s great to see so many families on the water with their kids. I didn’t run far from the camp but I heard quite a few people burned up motors or got beached in the spoil canal this morning. It’s a spooky ride on low tide.

Went to West Cove in the kayak, got to my trout spot and picked up one keeper trout quick, then a handful of dinks. A couple guys in a boat near me were doing the same. About 30 minutes after sunrise everyone who owns a boat in Cameron parish showed up, a few rolled through that spot and that was the end of that.
Went back into the marsh specifically to target flounder, spent about an hour trying to navigate my way, almost got stuck a few times, and did zero fishing along the way. Somewhere along the way I knocked my favorite combo overboard, tide was dropping and there was no way I was going to chance getting stuck to go find it.
Finally made it out and started fishing again and picked up these 3 all in the same spot. Even sort of sight cast one, it jumped out the water chasing bait, I cast right at it, felt something hit it right after, and it jumped back out the water with my gulp in its mouth.

Big Lake has been an absolute shite show the last few weeks. May hit it tomorrow afternoon if I can get all of my work finished

Seems like that’s the case everywhere. I figured since it was Sunday it wouldn’t be this bad. Knowing what I know now I wish I’d have just went straight into the marsh for reds and flounder and not even bother with the Cove for trout.

Was able to sneak away this morning, really just wanted to go site cast some reds and get the hell away from 10k people all over the damn place
Hit the marsh in NE side of PAC, and was able to do both
find the grass and find the reds
Water is gin clear
Bonus wild horses and trout

Went for what I targeted for. Some goo for a gravy later this week with my grandpa who is 85yo but can cook like a champ.

Hooked into a nice King Mackerel on saturday within a mile of our pass. He hit the deep trolling lure that was about 60 feet behind the boat.
Within about 3 seconds of hooking him, during the initial run, I see flipper about 600 yards behind us leaping out of the water. Then he was 400 yards behind us. Then 100 yards behind us. I cranked the drag down and tried to muscle the fish to the boat, and then he got extraordinarily heavy.
I fought flipper for about 10 minutes hoping he would spit the fish, but he ended up getting hooked. On the plus side I really got to test my new rod and reel. The 30 pound mono I have on there is obviously up to the task, I was able to get a dolphin within yards of the boat. I had to try to snap the line to get a break. Would've been my first king of the season. Still stewing about it.

Only saw 6 boats yesterday afternoon, only one on birds. Multiple sets picking without anyone around. 1.5 rows of trailers @2 but it was a parade of boats leaving heading down BL rd.
Fish were a mix, 1:2-1:3 solid fish to peanuts.

Had a speck taken off my hook about ten yards from me when I was surf fishing last year.

Friday my dad and I went fishing by the duck camp in Pheonix right by Point A LA Hache. Took the longtail through some thick vegetation. Water was crystal clear when there was not too much SAV. We went with Redfish in mind. Ended up catching 10 freshwater catfish, 1 bass, 1 redfish.
Sunday we did the same thing but we went in the morning, after a miserably slow morning and we ran a good bit, we settled into a spot on the way back in that we fished in the morning. We finished with 20 freshwater cats and 1 redfish.

Went to the red river (just south of Alexandria).
tight line like I do for catfish, but use small crawfish for bait.
Let them eat it, then they take it..set the hook and hold on. It's a good fight.
To cook:
Scale the fish, leave the thin skin on.
Cut meat in a "V" from top side of fish, thru backbone, and bottom ribs. Dont cut thru the ribs, follow the top ribs and thru back bone, and follow bottom ribs so you don't get a bunch of bones in each cut.
now that you have your meat, continue to cook a courtbullion as normal
ETA: crude drawing. Cut along dotted lines to avoid cutting thru ribs

Goo doesn't taste much different than your standard red fish lol. Always cracks me up when people call them trash and then pimp their delicious redfish on the half shell.
