Right because faster, flatter, deeper penetrating projectiles aren't what this all about. 1400 fps sucks, and it's not fun to shoot at all.

Well, anything would be better than a .45. Fat and slow is no way to handle these situations.

He only likes calibers that fit the 1911 platform. Seems like anyway

Penetration is generally giving in inches and those are always measured from center mass entrance. I cannot blame the manufacturers for this as it makes the bullet performance sound better from a marketing stand point.

I think the reason manufacturers test with the standard 4 layers plus gel is just that - to make the test standard.

Who would want to say "our bullet penetrates only 9" after passing though a forarm bone"?

I think the liberals would get their panties in a wad over this statement.

I am simply asking if you think slowing the bullet prior to a center mass strike will have more of an effect on a bullet that relies more on mass or velocity?

If talking from a purely physics standpoint, I'd say the heavier one. But then again, I'm sure I don't take all the factors into account like a ballistician does.

What caliber are you leaning towards?

Yep. I love my .357 sig conversion barrel for my XD. It gets a little expensive to shoot a lot, but very fun.

Listen to Bapple on this. Higher velocity offsets higher bullet weight. Penetration is not just those two factors though. It's also cross section of the bullet. It's like if you're trying to push a pencil vs a broom handle through a piece of leather. Lot easier with the pencil.

For pistols though, it's really negligible either way. You're going to have to keep shooting if you don't hit them exactly right. It's not like a high powered rifle where a higher velocity can get you with the heavy hydrostatic shock inches away from a good hit.

Pick a pistol you are comfortable shooting and carrying all the time and shoot it a lot.

That's the real answer to your question.

Making mountains out of molehills. Seriously doubt shooting through an arm is enough of a concern to switch ammo design or caliber.

Very true. This also shows that if a person is limited to FMJ ammo, it's best to go with the larger 45 because a bigger bullet makes a bigger hole. Of course, once you get to hollow points, the playing field is much more leveled.
