I've never gotten that far, but when you start running longer distances, you get to a point where you break through a wall and it's a pretty good feeling. From that point on until your legs start cramping up is a really relaxing way to stay in shape. Plus there's the challenge aspect of it.

ETA: Now I'm in the mood to start running again.

Salmon, I'm actually competing in the first race of my life this weekend. Hard to believe you could make it to 40 yrs old and have never lined up in a race setting of any sort.

3 mile paddleboard race in the Bay. I was going to sign up for the 6 mile, but it was titled elite and I didn't want them waiting for me at the finish line. My surf board will be slow, but it will be interesting to see if people have displacement boards under 12'6" (which is the class I'm in).

I may see what the field looks like (more importantly what their boards look like) and go for the 6 mile once I'm there. It was the same price and I didn't HAVE to preregister. If there are any old guys paddling the 6 mile on surf style boards I'll feel like an arse doing the rec race.

I love to run. I do love the challenge but at the end of the day I just love to run. I get the same feeling when I am sitting on the deer stand on opening morning too.

I've always liked running. The marathon was a challenge I wanted to be able to say I did. Not sure ill run another full marathon. 1/2 probably. The training time for a marathon gets to be extensive.

I've never run one, but have taken on other endurance activities. Yes, the challenge along with the mental and physical preparations are a motivation. I also like the logistics involved with planning a strategy. Plus, I like to do different things and go different places.

I've just started running and plan to do some races soon. I actually hate to run, but some of the off road trail series have caught my eye.

Something like THIS seems fun to me. The poster JoJo Hammer brought it to my attention and I am intrigued by the challenge. He says he's looking at doing it this year.

I did one years ago just to see if I could/for the challenge.

Salmon's advice is right on and that is the basic program I was supposed to have followed. I wasn't too strict about it.

That long run is really the core of the program. I skipped several of the mid week runs without issue, but don't skip a long run.

Get used to drinking and snacking while you train.

Vaseline on the nips was enough for me, but I did see several guys bleeding.

I pooped mid-race in a Marconi Meadows port-o-potty, I needed a rest by that time anyway.

I ran the first half in 1:50, finished in 4:06 and hurt like hell during miles 21-25. So don't go out too fast.

I'm glad I ran it, but have no desire to do another one.

I run 10K's and I've done a handful of 1/2 Marathons.

I thought this would qualify me for a Full Marathon. No such luck...

Miles 21-24 were hell but I finished in 5 1/2 hours. I will not run another without proper training.

My best advice is to follow a recovery plan with whatever workout plan you go with. Recovery and diet are just as important as the workout itself.

Good luck!

Reason = I like to run. 15 miles is my PR. Every mile after 10 just makes me feel good. Some days are not quite as good.

How do y'll hydrate while training on long runs? I was thinking on getting me a runners belt.
I have been making 4 mile loops to get to my water at my truck. Snatch and grab water on the run.

Do y'll use runners gell while training on long runs?

On my long runs, I have been using runners gell every 45 min. w/ water.

Ran the ccc10k . Still had gas in the tank . So I'm gonna sign up for the jazz 1/2 marathon. There's a runkeeper app on my phone. I'm gonna follow the half marathon training guide on it.

I've run several and used Hal higdon for the first two. His plan works more than well enough.

To contrast what others have said(not to say the long run isn't important), but the most important thing is consistent weekly mileage. Run far and run often. You're better off running 5-7 miles 4x per week than one long run. ie do NOT skip mid week runs and only do the long runs. You will crash and burn. 30 miles per week is a minimum for a good plan IMO. Too many of the beginner plans are low on mileage. 30 miles/ week is a pretty basic week for me during ironman training and I can tell you I run way better now than when I was running 18-25/week.

Friend that I work with ran the Boston Monday. Dude is an amazing athlete.

He finished 244th overall with a 2:37:35 time. I believe that's the right number.

Oh, he was an offensive lineman in college.

Any marathon runners out there? I just ran a 1/2 marathon on the 4/13. Looking to move up to a full marathon. Looking for tips(the do's and do not's).

I don't suggest moving to the full. I think you would be much happier improving your 1/2 time. I did a full, it was pure torture on my body. I got hurt and burnt out before the race came around. Sure I can say I ran a full, but there was little joy in it.
