used to be considered a decent middle of the road boat, maybe better than a Carolina Skiff, but not as good as a Whaler(overrated,) or a Grady White

The key phrase is "used to be." When they lowered their price to get in at Bass Pro is when they went a little downhill. But really to me a boat is about 80% the motor you have on back.

I'd go with a 42' Hydra-Sport with 4 outboards, personally.

I think there are old Makos and new Makos. Small Makos and big Makos. If you come out and say what size/model and what year range there would be some good responses.

At 12. At 12, I have faith that I won't be left stranded.
Onboard desalinization and icemaking, too, of course.

Mako was bought by Bass Pro.

Mako made a really good boat prior to that happening.

Not so much now.

I’d hate to know how much gas those burn. It has to be gallons per mile

Find a pre- late 90s Mako and you have a good hull. After that, the company began a decline when it was sold. Here is a good discussion:

LINK

Former owner's son posted this:

quote:

Here it is in a nut shell. Hurricane Andrew took the roof off the factory in August 1992. It took six months to get back into production. Our insurance company declined our claim. We struggled for two years to get our feet under us again and decided that going public was our best option of keeping "Mako" a family business. We went public in August 1995 but due to a bad second quarter right in front of the offering we had to give up control to the partners that took us public. Dad and I were removed within a week of going public and they installed industry people to make a new "Mako". Within Two years the stock was delisted and Tracker bought all the stock and has owned ever sense. It was not our intention to have anybody but our family run the company but even with our best intentions sometimes things do not always work as planned. In hindsight maybe we could of done things different but down deep we just wanted to build great boats, take them fishing with friends and family and make memories that lasted a lifetime. Due to great people like Bill Munro the funaments took on a life of their own. I can now look forward to taking my kids to something that I thought was long gone but so much a part of my life; A Mako owners Tournament.

Over priced, under built entry level boats with variable service & warranty after the sale.
You could get a good one or a turd, gel coat, thru hull, stringer, hatch issues have all been reported by owners.

I was told you can finance a regular arse bay boat for 20 years right now. Bet a man could get 50 year on a freeman if he wanted to bad enough
