I got a tick last year on my knee while riding the four wheeler around the lease, instead of waiting till I got back to the camp, my dumbass used a lighter. Bad idea, apparently that makes them spit up anything they have in them. Ended up with the exact same symptoms you are describing. Went to an infectious diseaeses doc and he said lyme is very rare down here, turned out it was Rocky Mountain spotted fever, two weeks of antibiotics and I was good to go...

I've been in Knoxville TN for a year. In late Feb, I actually felt a SMALL something just next to my left armpit. I actually thought it was a skin tag. It was flesh colored, or at least not dark like a tick...and TINY. I felt it while showering, and after about 5 or 6 days, while showering one morning, I felt it...but now it was BIG. I knew immediately what it was, but reaction was to pull it off. I pulled it off in the shower. That next day, I went home for four days. The morning I left to go home, the thing was all kinds of purple/black/red/blue, and about the size of a dime. Freaked me out. That next morning, when I was home, I went straight to the doctor. I told him I was concerned about Lyme disease. He said we don't have deer ticks in South MS...to which I responded "I've been in East TN for a year". He immediately prescribed some antibiotics, and I've had no issues other than the

See, this bothers me. With all the flooding we had last year, I could see it highly likely that deer ticks got down here on floating logs and debris via the waterways. Also, they don't know where the wildlife runs with that kind of flooding. That's a dangerous assumption, IMO.

I agree, that doctor shouldn't have assumed that at all

A friend of mine, hes much older early 60s now, has it. Got it hunting on our property in north St Tammany, this was back in early 80s though. Apparently he had a bad case, was in the hospital for two months, lost all kinds of weight and was really sick. He has lasting damage to his heart and brain. He use to own a bar and was fairly successful, had to get rid of it after he got sick, on disability now. I think half is problems are from partying a little to hard during the 70s though. I never knew it wasn't common in the south. Good to know, was worried about my lil bro a couple of years ago when he got sick from one, ended up just being some bacterial infections from taking it out wrong. Good luck bud, I am sure you will be fine, that's the same symptoms my brother had.

Well, I went to the doctor. They took a bunch of blood and did a MRI. Waiting on the blood work. They dont think I have Lyme disease but they are not sure. The MRI showed that I have swelling of my brain stem which is causing the headaches. Its amazing how fast you can get results back when family is involved.

Here's a little history. Supposedly, I contracted Encephalitis just after Hurricane Gustav. Spent two nights in the hospital with a swollen brain stem and headaches that would make me puke. I never had headaches before other than hungover. The thing is they never could prove it with blood work. I had all the systems and was eaten alive with mosquitos while working on my camp at this time which lead them to this conclusion. The doctor thinks that the tick bite or the mosquitos that we have now might have kicked off the same thing over again. Although I only have a nagging headache and other minor symptoms.

For now, they prescibed an anti-inflammatory for the swelling. Let ya'll know more info when the blood work comes back.

While neither sounds great I hope the steroids help the swelling.

I would insist on getting a prescription of doxycyline based on the history of the tick bite. It's true we have little or no lyme's dz in the south, but we have lots of erlichiosis and rocky mountain spotted fever. If it is tick related, the doxy will clear it up quick. The longer you wait the harder it is to get rid of. The incubation time for tick fever is about 6-14 days so it sounds like it's in the right time frame.

If it's infectious, steroids without antibiotics could worsen the situation. It won't hurt to start them just in case. He should've started them just to be on the safe side. Especially with the neurological symptoms you're having.

You don't always get the characteristic bullseye lesion.

Get fine tip pick ups (tweezers). Grasp as close to the attachment point as possible and gently pull up.

What do you do Smackover?

Btw his advice is spot on.

Doxy 100 mg twice daily with a full glass of water. The Rx is generic so you really have nothing to lose.

you had west nile. encephalitis, rocky mountain spotted fever, west nile, etc were the possible problems i had the summer after katrina. found out 3 weeks after leaving the hospital that it was west nile.

I'm pretty sure Lyme doesn't have a cure.

Research must not have been too extensive.
