what you guys need to know is ldwf has a handle on red fish that are <= 4/5 years of age (inshore). at that point they move offshore to spawn in big aggregates in the gulf...and nobody in any of the gulf states knows the current condition of the offshore population.

Difficult to tag them in large enough numbers useful for management without potentially killing large numbers of them (they've tried it in the past and it didnt work very well)

Something has to be done about the number of fish guide boats bring in each week.

Get rid of bow fishing

Adjust limits based on storms

I am currently watching the Matrix guy on Paradise Louisiana fishing redfish. He said that it has been a good year along the ICC, MRGO, and marsh areas around the Rigolets.

Fair enough. Bad word composition on my part. But I'd say the demise of Delacroix / hopedale has certainly been because so many new bow fishing outfits run through those ponds. Most of that marsh can't be gated off, so to say. There are other issues, as well. Zero nighttime enforcement, and no way to know who's running through who's land / leases.

How excited would anyone be if they pulled up to their duck pond only to notice an airboat had been shooting redfish all night. No ducks will be there... and undersized reds will be afloat.

if those areas have also seen an increase in salvinia(there is you real culprit) combine that with people prowling those shallow ponds and lagoons all day too

VBay and the west side of the state aren’t seeing the declines like the east. Don’t think there is a big pogie boat crew that the east side does not see all the bow fisherman

Can’t think of any bow fishing outfits on west side

He’s not lying…… It may be time to reduce the limits again. When they lower the speck limit that will put even more pressure on the redfish.

I think the losses to the estuary are playing a bigger part than is being mentioned. Think of all those “edges” and grass flats that have been reduced to open water.

There aren’t any bow fishing airboats tear assing around all night in V bay like there are in Leeville and grand isle. They need to outlaw them.

Hopedale has a certain very popular charter captain who is incredibly consistent in his (and his team's) ability to pile up redfish on the cleaning table every.single.day.

From hottest day of July to the coldest in February, they produce mostly limits.

To think this is somehow not impactful would be pretty damn silly.

Bow fishing isn’t all that easy. There are maybe 20 charter captain for bow Fishing.

Ida really changed the landscape of the marsh. I fly over it daily and the difference is incredible. Also, the amount of recreational fishermen out and about every single day has increased.

Pogey boats are, and will continue to be the largest detriment to coastal fisheries.

Friend of mine that lives in Westwego says the same thing. He would fish the Bayou Segnette, Pier 90 area a few evenings a week after work, and he stopped fishing that area, he says that it's still messed up from Ida, that Ida completely changed that whole area.

Part of the problem is that people don't give a shite about possession limits, only the daily bag limit. Not directed at anyone in particular, but I've seen people bitching but I know damn well their freezers at home are over the limit.

Those people piss me off more than guide boats putting their paying clients on a box of fish to take home. At least they're following the regulations.

Is the possession limit on reds 10 total per person? How many freezers bust that? In general, people like to pint fingers at regulations they don't like, but disregard the regulations themselves.

Step 2: no more bowfishing

Can't really see that being a big issue. Personally, I don't know anyone who bow fishes. EVERYBODY I know is a rod and reel guy and I'd bet the percentage of people bowfishing is miniscule compared to them.

I'm genuinely curious as to why your method should be preserved, while another man's should be outlawed.
I dont doubt that bowfishing takes some fish that a recreational angler might catch.
But if you're gonna let commercial vessels run around catching hundreds or thousands, why would you worry about a bowfishing operation that has to adhere to the same limits as you?
For every 1 bowfishing rig, there are 10-20 recreational boats. And probably 5 guide boats (maybe more)
