I would like to make a trip to south Louisiana this fall to purchase Louisiana grown citrus fruit when it becomes available, especially boxes of oranges and satsumas.

Does anyone have a recommendation on where best to go to purchase Louisiana grown citrus, and around what dates is it available?

The best would be becnels on the way to Venice, not sure of the town, maybe belle chase, maybe port sulfur? But in another month you will be able to get them at almost any fruit stand

When I was younger, I worked at the Po Folks on lobdell/415 in port Allen. I remember they bought a lot of their fruits from local people. I don’t think they bought apples locally but I could be wrong. Satsumas were definitely local. I figure most fruit stands carry local fruits but you never really know.

Not sure where you traveling from but most of the trees that you see for sale in Baton Rouge area (cleggs) for sure come from the becnels in Jesuit bend.
If your making a sure enough trip then go get your trees buy some satsumas and drive to port sulfur and get some oysters.

“Need that first frost baw” that’s what my pawpaw always said.
Nothing better than fresh satsumas in a duck blind or dove field.

Peak of the season you can get them anywhere, even grocery stores and big box stores. Walmart routinely purchases in season local produce.

Yep. Rouses has Louisiana satsumas in stock now, at least in Lafayette anyway.

I make about 15 gal. of satsuma juice per year. My trees were thin last year so I bought from this guy in St. Mary Parish. He will open on Nov. 1.

Since we're on the topic of satsumas, I'd recommend everyone try juicing a couple, and boiling it down with pectin and sugar to make a jellied satsuma topping to go with your thanksgiving turkey this year instead of cranberry sauce. I did it on a whim last year and it came out great.
